After getting a spare instrument cluster for my LTD I decided to have a crack at painting the fascia to match the wood grain in the rest of the car. after a bit of trial and error I came up with a process that gives a result that is almost indistinguishable from the original factory wood grain... thought I'd throw in a photo to show the end result, getting white instrument faces made for it next week and hopefuly will get it fitted up by next weekend. Tried the process out on my mobile phone to, now I have a phone that matches the interior of my car perfectly... it's a bugger if you drop it.

Soooo, what's the process? I know modicoat do that sort of thing, but if you can pull it off that well with paint that's impressive.

The process is pretty involved, takes about 14 coloured paints and dyes, some airbrush work and other stuff, even with all that it only took about 3 hours to do (including 1 1/2 hours baking time in the booth) I am giving serious thought to starting a bit of a side business doing this stuff. There are others out there doing wood grain on cars but you have a limited range of colours and patterns and as they usually involve applying a plastic film over the surface they claimed they couldn't do something with the depth of the fascia without the pattern stretching to the point that it'd look like crap plus, they can't do intricate shaped objects. with my process I can replicate the pattern and colour of the original and apply it to anything, and any shape, so far I have done this with the wood grain from my LTD (obviously) as well as AU Fairlanes and Fairmonts (yep they are different) once I get samples of trim from E series and others I can mix paints for them to.

Oh and it goes without saying I could do these in any colour IE to match body work etc... would be a little cheaper.

Personally I reckon it'd look best with the guage faces left black, but hey we all have different tatstes.

Hi again, Ok first up to HLC yes it can be produced in grey scale, just a matter of mixing the paints and dyes to suit, don't expect it'd be a problem but I haven't tried it before, might have a play with it later in the week. So far I have done the consol switch plate, stereo surround (see double din in Aye you thread) interior door handle surrounds, dash cluster, door courtesy light frames. sun roof switch, head rest mounted video monitor screen frames and next will be the steering wheel switch clusters, map reading light, glove box lock and D pillar reading light frames and that will probably be about it. any more and I think it would become overdone and look tacky.

More than impressed with the results. Had the bezel done as a starter. This was a piece I gave to Modicoat 6 months ago and it doesn't even compete. I wish I could show a picture of their efforts compared to the superb effort of Umineko. However I was too embaressed to even put Modicoats pathetic effort into the frame, just kept it in the garage thinking more dollars I've stupidly wasted. Seriously, if any of you Ghia or Fairmont drivers want some additional woodgrain done you shouldn't hesitate to drop Umineko a PM.
