I think it's fair.

Althought i still wont be buying one.

If it will help save the environment a little more then good.

What a crock! How about including LPG vehicles? Electric hybrids still use an electricity source to recharge and where does that electricity come from? Oh yeah, that's right, in the main from coal burning power plants. Pray tell, how is this saving the environment?

Not fair. If this is implemented it will be just another bandaid fix by the government, akin to the speed limits in the NT. Uninformed decisions made by our "all knowing" politicians. As the article says, people already get hit harder if they choose to drive a 6 or 8 cylinder car. Hybrids like the Prius arent even that good for the environment anyway, as the massive pollution created during the cars production means that it takes years for it to offset that and start becoming an environmentally friendly choice. My 2 cents anyway.

Not fair. Their cars cause wear and tear to the roads just like any other car. They should pay too.

They actually get there electricity from the main engine and through regenerative braking, they are never plugged into mains power. In low power situations ie cruising on highway or downhill the batteries are charged and the batteries are drained when giving it the boot, thats why a 1.3l civic/prius provides same amount of grunt as a 2.0l one.

I agree, and have been told the Hybrids generate a lot more pollution during manufacture then a regular car (due to the development and manufacture of the fuel cells etc)

Well why not give motorcycles and scooters free rego while they are at it. I'm sure a 50cc 4 stroke scooter would create less pollution per Km travelled than a Toyota Hybrid. : Government Wan*ers.

If they are serious about this they ought to include LPG powered vehicles.

Ha ha look at the bald nob in the photo, he can have his hybrid (must be his daughter and grandkids). Whos going to pay for the batteries? For a car that costs over $40K on road, with a battery live of somthing significantly less than ten years there has got to be some inventive. Anyone who falls for this is a tool, you only save $300 per year, about the cost of one of the batteries.

If they include people with LPG powered vehicles. what they are going to loose money so they will up the tax on LPG... I wouldnt be supprised if LPG goes up if they included them in this scheme...
thats my thoughts on the topic...

Straw clutching by grossly incompetent wannabes who stiil cannot understand why they were thrashed by a slightly less incompetent group of shouldn'tbes in the last election.

Want to make it fair? How about rego at $/kg and then divide by kms travelled.
e.g. If you have a giant 4WD and line in a city then it will COST YOU HEAPS.
If you live in the country and have to travel long distances to everything and drive a normal car then it will be much cheaper.

I will just sit here now and wait for the 4 foot tall SMS suffering pygmies with long beards and harry butler hats to arc up about their God given rights. (not that I am stereotyping)

On the LPG front, that might work if it were actually available everywhere not just in the cities or along Highway 1.

If they include LPG taxis they will lose out. Our cab cost $1500 a year to rego back in the 1980s

Not Fair we pay rego to (in an ideal world) ensure we drive on safer roads throughout Australia, why should they be any different.?

They have been telling everyone the excise on LPG is coming for the past 20 years. They also told us that gas will never be more than half the price of petrol but it has been a couple of times, they just forgot to inform the ACCC

Oh I think it would be fair because I live in the country and I travel long distances. So it saves me money and I am FAR more important than YOU so anything that helps me must be fair.

It was sarcasm.

I'm so sick of this environmental bull all the time. These tree huggers who prefer to buy imports are now going to be rewarded for not buying locally made. This whole farce of global warming has really just got to stop. Some studies have proven human's effect on global warming is pretty close to nil. Unless it can be conclusively proven that human's have a significant impact, why should we care? Of course, it cannot be proven conclusively that human's don't have an impact either, but hey, most democratic constitutions employ an innocent until proven guilty stance in law, why not for global warming?

I believe human's should stop trying to stop the inevitable and accept that one day this Earth will be unliveable. Thankfully it won't be anytime soon and therefore it really is of no concern to me or anyone else from today's world.

You make a good point there mate, I remember a few years back when a few hippies were complaining through the media about how many "fuel guzzling" 6 cyl commodores and falcons that the govt had as fleet cars. Following that some govt spokesperson responded by sayin that they were going to cut back on their purchase of falcons and commodores and start buying smaller cars. How many small cars are built in Australia? I dont think that Ford or Holden make any? Considering that Ford and Holden have recently let go of hundreds of employees shouldnt the government be doing all that they can to protect these iconic Australian companies and the thousands of jobs that they create? Why reward the purchase of imported cars while local car manufacturers are suffering? Sure the environment may be affected one day, but jobs are being lost today, and hundreds of lives are being affected because of it! My 2 cents anyway.

Great, so where do I go to get my free rego? My car doesnt blow smoke, and uses less fuel than a 4cyl on long trips, which given my location, I do a fair bit of.

Oh wait, is this only for those little ricebubble "fashionable greenie" cars?

What a joke.
I am sure that this is some type of discrimination, isn't it! :

Anyway, according to the article they stand to save around $260 a year. Would I stop driving my Ford to save $260 a year? No way.

yeah absolute BS!!!!

rego pays for roads and other stuff as well, no 'environmentally' friendly car deserves any of that treatment more than an LPG or diesel.

waiving the rego fees is BS, everyone has to pay for basically using the bloody car on the roads, what makes the prius so special?

The way fuel is going I can see a few people jumping ship, but cheaper rego might be fair if they do it for cars with gas as well. I have a mate with one of those scooter and if you take the peddles off you have to put rego on it in NSW. Nothing is fair some would say... :

http://www.plasmaboyracing.com/whitezombie.php

Would you get free rego if you built a car like that lol...

What a crock, the 5th gear show in England did a road test with a Toyota Prius and 2 other 4 cylinder cars 1 was a VW golf, forgot the other. They did both city and motorway driving with the prius being run mainly on the electrics in the city, overall the Golf was more economical to run.( Albiet very minor difference) As when the Prius is on the Motorway it runs entirely on the petrol motor.Just another gimick. They are OK if driven totally in the city where you are never going over 60 kph.

And that is the reason I bought a turbo diesel when we got the Peugeot. As we live outside of the metro area, it is cheaper for us to run a car on diesel than it is to go for a hybrid. Mind you, when Peugeot bring out the diesel/electric hybrid 307, then that'll be a lot better.
The Falcon is on LPG as well, so I'd miss out there as well as the excise going on to LPG soon.

Just move out to the country, cheaper to register your cars there. Saves me $100 a year. Dropped from $637 to $535 for the Falcon.
