You buy tinting paint (I forget the proper name) you can get it from Autobarn for $10-$20. Just follow the directions on the can, very easy to do.

The "tinting paint" is called night shades. Costs around $15. You can get it from Autobahn, Supercrap, Auto one etc.

Had it done on a previous vehicle ... and got defected for it (long time ago).

If you want it to look nice and shiney though ... got to a panel beater and have them spray it with a clear coat ... I have seen some that have been tinted the colour of the factory paint and it looked nice and smooth.

Don't go over the top though ... as it will stand out too much and the cops will pick on you for it.

One coat of night shades should be fine, but any more than that and you may only use it for off road use - it says so on the can.

You can night shade your tail lights as long as you can still see them from 200 metres away from what I have heard. I dont know too much about the au's yet, but I know on some cars you can actually pull the tail light apart and spray the inside of the lens, therefore keeping the shiny exterior, ooooohhh, shiny.

Here's an idea. Lets just dull our taillights so that they're harder to see so there's a higher likelihood of someone running up your ***!

Yeah, taillight tinting is a stupid idea. Don't turn your nice AU into a dirty ricer. It's just wrong.

yes, i have it done on my au xr6 and i get nothing but compliments about how good it looks. i wouldnt recomend the night shade spray paint it looks horrid and doesnt last long. my advice go to your panel beater and have them do it with a clear coat and oven baked. if you would like to see my photos just e mail me and ill forward them to you! i have been pulled over many times (mainly for speeding) and have never been picked up for my highly illegal tinted tail lights, rather only to be told i have a tailight globe out. The only negative thing about it is that my reverse lights are pathetic and it annoys me. If anyone wants a set of tinted tail lights and lives in the melbourne area, just let me know, id be happy to swap them for a set of non tinted tail lights as i am thinking of selling my car.

If you know or are a spray painter, then use a few drops of black in clear. Then apply coats 'till you have achived the darkness you require. You will end up with a higher lustre than Night Shades can offer. Legalities are compromised though.

Default These are all you need...

How about replacing your factory ones with a pair of black base custom tail lights like these puppies??
Once I get my "other" things done,I'm going to put them on my au futura.
They look sweeet...!

If you want to save yourself the hassle why not just go for the black stockings tint. I've seen two AU's with stockings on the taill lights, one dark blue AU with black stockings and a white AU with white stockings. IMO the original series II/III tail lights are perfect the way they are, can't understand why people would go for the ricer altezza stuff. Then again all to their own..
