Max Rim Width on WQ LX

G'day guys,
The missus has got a jeans blue WQ LX, and im currently goin through the process of spendin up abit on my ute, so i thought i'd be nice and treat her to some new wheels for her Fez.
The ones she likes a the Panther Vectors, but on the website it states only available in 7.5"'s wide. I was thinkin this would be a tad to wide for the car, what do you guys think?
We are considering either 17's or 18's.

The ST uses 7inch wide rims (7x17) so 7.5inch might just fit.

Alright, i would have to go for a wider tyre then hey? so the rim doesnt stick out further than the tyre.

You'd definitely have to go for a wider tyre, maybe 215/40R17 or 225/35R17(if that size exists).

However keep in mind that when you use 215/40R17, the innerside of the tyres rub against the fender guards (is that right? fender-guards?)... just ask MISTA FIESTA about the solution to that. :

Ive got 215/40R17,and just pinned back the rear inner guards with cable ties. The fronts dont get any rubbing tho..

I worked out you can definitley fit 17x 7.5, but maybe use 225/30R17 (if exists) as the overal diameter is less than 215/40R17. 18s also fit but not too sure on the tyres.

215/40/R17 is fine on a 7inch rim. In fact 215/45 are recommended for rim widths of 7 to 8.5. 225/30 needs a rim width of atleast 7.5

Im running 195/50R16's and have rubbing in the rear but the overall diamter is larger than most 17's.

Nup, that's what I have now and I havent heard/felt any scrubbing. Which tyres did u get?

Thanks, just checked and there's at least 1cm clearance. The tyres are Maxxis NV-1 ( I think ), not my first choice as I don't know how good they are, but i got a really good deal.

Awesome, congrats on the new wheels and tyres. Personally im not a fan of ROH Stradas but those wheels look best on Moondust Silver Fiestas.

Im thinkin bout get some wheels for my fez, but i have a question to all that already have wheels...

Does the handling get affected in any way with the larger dia wheels?

Can of worms that one. Some say the 16's are better, nippier handling, some say 17's. You really have to try yourself I suppose.

there was a thread a while ago about this lol. it turned out a bit messy.

Basically 17" does improve handling over the 16" BUT you tend to feel more of the bumps. its not the kinda stuff that bruises livers or anything, some people just prefer a stiffer ride.

The 16" are a really good comprimise on both, they offer relatively good handling and they dont tend to pic up as much as the 17" wheels.

Too many variables to directly compare. Down to personal choice. Im happy with my 16's and they fill the guards nicely. Can't argue with the price I picked them up for either

Handling and ride depends on the profile of the tyre. Many new cars have 65's which basically soak up all the bumps and make for 'soft' handling. Standard Fez wheels have 50's which make the car handle better, and make the suspension feel stiffer. the lower you go the more you feel the bumps. When I put 17" rims on mine, my tyres went from 50's down to 40's. I feel bumps more, but not a huge difference. If you had 35's or 30's i reckon you'd really notice it. I've seen cars with 25's...almost driving on the rims, too bad if you hit a pothole.

Thanks mate, things are settling down a bit, she's remarkably strong but there are still hard times, the court date will be a struggle I think.

BACK ON TOPIC:
17x7.5's should be fine, although stick with a 205/40R17, it'll keep it legal and you won't have any rubbing issues. (theres not many 35 series or lower 17's that'll be the right fitment, readily available in OZ)

Ah yes, according to www.michelin.com.au, for 205/40R17 tyres the optimum rim width is 7.5" (7.0" minimum, 8.0" maximum).

16s or 17s? I would go for 16s with the taller tyres unless you've stiffened the suspension. Otherwise the body roll will tend to start distorting the contact patch with the very low profile tyres.

Well guys went out and chose the wheels last Thursday, had to order them so they could drill them to suit, and picked them up today.

They are 17x7" BSA G2-78's with just some Nexen 205/40/17 tyres, and cost $1600 as a full package with wheels, tyres, fitting, balance and wheel nuts.

All in all i think it looks good and the missus loves it, just need to drop it about 30-35mm and will look sweet.
