Default What's in a name?

I suppose it's my own fault 'cos I don't use my "correct" name .. typically I use Rod instead of Rodney. But why is it when I email people, my user name starts "rodney", approx half respondants (who don't know me) will reply to "Rob"???

I also get this when I speak to people face-to-face and call them .. approx half call me Rob; which I can more understand than the email thing.

Is my name that difficult to comprehend/process/remember? Anyone else get on a regular basis?

Spelling is more the problem with my name. My real name is Michael Derix, but people have spelt it as Micheal Derricks, or similar.... but then the librarian back at secondary school always mistakingly called me John :

I'm Lee, and I get "********" and "****face"... confuses me to no end.
Seriously though, I've had a few odd things at parties, like Steve, and my friend's family all thinks I'm called Leeroy. Oh, and if I hear a single syllable word that rhymes with my name in a party/bar I always look around.

My son and Husband always get called by their last name which is really bizarre considering that their names are Rob and Mitchell and our last name doesn't even resemble a first name

My name is Johnnie Walker, and its amazing how many people actually laugh or giggle when I introduce myself. I had a whole bunch of this years apprentices laughing at me in the class room when I said my name, they thought I was joking. Or people refer to me as " Black Label ",or a variation of that, blue, green, gold.

I'm Matt (Mathew), but I get called Michael a lot.

Growing up, I was also called Greg a lot too. That's because my twin is Greg. But that's an insult. He's a peckerhead.

Michael is my most common though.

Well my name is Shawn (and of course, with that spelling I get a lot of Sean/Shaun spellings) and when you say it reasonably quickly it sounds like John. So naturally (with my Father's name being John) whenever I used to answer the phone at home, "Hello Shawn speaking", the person would hear 'John' and start the conversation thinking I was my Father!

My name's Gerardine, but I get Jodie a lot. Usually on the phone.

Mostly when it's written down I get Geraldine.

If people call me Geraldine I just won't answer.

On the other hand my Dad's full name is Thomas Richard, but everyone calls him Richard, as his father's name was Thomas (Tom).
If telemarketers ring up and ask for the manager of our business, we tell them his name is Thomas. Then when they call back we know they're telemarketers (or else just someone he doesn't want to talk to) and tell them he's not there.

My name starts with a "W", because I have red hair everyone takes it upon themselves to call me "Blue"... I grew up with it and it doesn't bother me but it's rude all the same...

My name is Kerry. I used to be the only person on the whole of BHP's computer systems who had a "Mr" in front of my name. Mainly because I got sick of people sending replies to "Miss Kerry....". I had to phone a contractor in Bris Vegas one day. His secretary answered and I identified myself, she put me through. This really cheerful bloke answers "HELLO Kerry!", and I says, in my naturally very deep voce, "Hello, how are you this afternoon?". DEADLY silence on the other end of the phone!

Another one, a Midshipman (Officer under training) was named Rhys. All the bloody deployment I was calling him Kyle! (Kyle Reese is the good guy from The Terminator)

My name is Victor.

Been called Vincent many many a time. Once at the snow, the ski instructor called me Oscar. : And my mates ended up calling me Oscar for the whole of that week just to annoy me. I'm fairly easy going though so I just laughed.
