Default Question for the PC game buffs..

Hi there PC gamers, lol, I have stumbled upon a copy of "The need for speed SE" for PC which ive had floating around for years, now i used to play this on my old 586 pc.
What i dont understand is why it wont play on my PC now.
The game is DOS/Windows 95, when i loaded the cd rom, it said i need 19875645k memory?
I dont understand as i played this on a puter which had total 500 mb hard disk and 16mb memory, now i have 1g memory and 60 gb HD..
Ant ideas?

cheers, phil.

Man NFSSE was great, loved the showcase and handling in it

First question are You on Windows XP?

If so try the emulation mode in XP, right click on the program, click on compatability and try running the program in Windows 95 mode.

There are other tricks/programs that help you run DOS games, but i found the compatibility mode thing allowed me to play NFS SE, on my current AMD Dual Core system, i was still limited to 640*480 graphics (which you get used) to and the mouse was impossible to use in the menu's but it worked.

XP is based on Windows NT, totally different from Win 95/dos.

Even if you get it working, you most likely will not have any sound.

There would be even more mucking around involved there.

I really liked that game too, the porsche NFS was the best overall tho..

Don't worry, it's just the install script is running into an unkown OS. Has nothing to do with how much memory you have, it doesn't know how to address it correctly.

Because your disk no doubt i9s formatted in NTFS (Windows NT File System) the game (Which does not support windows NT) will not be seeing you hard drive, so there for it thinks that it is not there, or has a capacity of 0 bytes. You will not be able to install this game on Windows XP. Try a program called DOSBOX. It might be able to emulate DOS for the game to run on correctly, see how you go.

Grab yourself an old PII400 and install Windows 98SE.....great for older games...you could even get your hands on a Voodoo 2 for real retro fun (yes I'm serious).

This was the first game I ever brought, and it was brilliant. I would have been pretty young then and I was shattered when I came home to discover that my 486 couldn't cope.

It was from this point on that started my gaming life...LOL

I wish they would remake that game, how good would be on a PS2, new physics and graphics, they could keep some of the old cars and throw some new ones in!

I'd love it if they remade a lot of those old games. Same gameplay, same storyline, but new graphics
