If you bail to late, it could be more dangerous than if you didn't.

All I know that it must be pretty bad because Canberra has been covered with a haze for the last few days. I hope all get through it well.

Family Photo's = one thing most people forget (Incl. Video's) Legal Papers = Will's , Deeds etc. Computer = (even if it's just the unit & software ) monitors/keyboards etc can be replaced , but most people a lot of info on their computer . A Bag of Clothes = How many people say " we've only got the clothes we're wearing ". Family Heirlooms = another forgotten item (have them packed early ) better to pack them early than lose them . Family Pet/Pets Then if you've got time without endangering yourself and have room , work from there on... Can anyone think of things I've Missed

Some advise, Bail early or dont bail at all, bailing at the last minute could kill you.

That's what I meant , I should have stated more clearly . Nothing worse for a firey than trying to get a family out of a house/area & fight the flames too , they can only do one thing at a time . Better to bail early & give the guy's a "Clear Go" .

I live in the Dandenongs (well, used to, moving back there next month...) and I have a safe which has all my important bits in it. Pictures/videos from when my children were born, wedding certificate, archived CD's of years and years of pictures, things like that. All of my photos on display are copies, and can be replaced by what's in my safe. Whether I have the opportunity or not to grab it before a fire comes through, I take comfort knowing that they're safe in the safe. I also have a poor bag in the shed (the red/white/blue striped ones). Inside it has clothes for us all for 2 days (one day wearing, one day washing), and tinned foods, crackers, UHT milk, and water. I would grab the safe, the bag and my tower in the event of an evacuation. |

In Wodonga we have had smoke here on and off since last Saturday as well as falling ash. The smoke will be from all of the fires in King Valley that were started by lightning on the Friday night.
It's still nothing like 3 years back when I couldn't see the end of my street that was only three houses away. |

hope you get through it ok
if the people in charge say you should go ....then you should go. the firefighters dont need to risk their lives trying to get you out at the last minute when they could be working on putting out the fire.

Well in the last few hours the haze has gotten thicker and you can now smell the smoke aswell as see it. It is visible from about 50-100m ahead at my place.
So either we have a fire in Canberra, or that must be a mother of a fire in Victoria. |

Grab photos and pets and bugger off and let the insurance company soften the blow. |

Just had a visit from my brother tonight, he works for Melbourne Water and has been away fighting fires on and off for over a week now. He had today off and came down to visit his partner and have a couple of frothy cleansing ones with me. He even brought a copy of his will for me to hold on to in case something happens.
If you happen to read this Rick, we are all proud of your commitment during this crisis. The same sentiment goes out to others who are putting themselves on the line for us. |

yes whilst on the topic.
A big thankyou to all those fire fighters and volunteers risking their lives to help others at the time as previously said, photos, kids, wife, pets, clothing (at least your wallet to buy some) have it all packed now and when they say you need to stay or go you can just grab your bags and leave

O/T I was just notified yesterday afternoon that I have to be in Melbourne (St. Vinny's Hospital) next Monday Afternoon (18th) & was wondering what the situation is along the highway (coming from NSW), as the Mrs will be doing the driving ?. I'll check in on Sunday night if someone could give us an "update" at that time Please . Thanks in Advance Norm
