Default Covering number-plates in pictures.

I've seen people's car pictures on the net, some with their number plate covered and others arent. What's the danger of letting everyone know your number-plate?.

Cheers,

Ivan

Ebay scams for a start, possible thefts of cars.....you brag about a burnout or similar on the net and theres a nice big pic of your cars rego.....makes it easy for the cops to nab you.
someone has it in for you....now they know what car you drive and what the rego is.....etc.

there was a video on the net ages ago that featured a WRX hanging wheelies down this back street and eventually crashed into a tree......the cops seen the vid, arrested the driver and charged him MONTHS after the film was shot.

Microsoft Paint, Adobe Photoshop. Just use the paintbrush.

you can do it in the program 'paint' on you computer and use the spray can tool to 'spray' over it.
or apparently when you take the picture of your car spray hairspray on it an you cant see it. (not sure on this)

It's not a spray, but a clear ridged panel that covers the plate behind a plate cover. The upward ridges refract the light and the numbers/letters cannot be seen from an angle. But I for one would prefer the speeding fine than the one that this attracts.

That "stuff" was proven not to work, and in the rare cases where it did have an effect they just re-process the images

I dont care about the number plate coverup on photos.....wondered myself why some do, but I cant drive it around town without plates on and people look, many know where it lives, as I have met people miles away say ...."Oh, you live in 'such & such' strret....seen your car there!" And the car pops up here and there on different sites anway! Whats the secret?

Personally I dont see the point, If it gets vandalised its gonna be some yobs just passing it on the street, not someone who saw it online and went out of their way to find it. But if you plan on doing burnouts and posting pics.....please do so :P

I agree, especially when just standard cars have their plates covered.

Your showing everyone your plates when you drive on the road, I don't think bragging about a burnout with a photo of your car is satisfactory evidence in law courts for a successful conviction anyway.

I think it is often about non engineered mods to your car.

I know before my car was engineered I didnt want my plates in pictures.

No body has mentioned warrantee or insurance.
A car at a track day, be it stock or not, can cause dramas with both.
Or even pictures of a modified car, be it moving or not can void your warrantee or insurance.

Some people's cars from the outside look just like schmick stock cars - but what can be revealed on forums for example is that tens of thousands of $$$ have been spent on some cars with mechanical mods and stereo equipment for example. If certain undesirables have seen that car around and now know what it really has, they now have a greater temptation to knock it off. Hiding the rego at least makes it harder to track down.

They wouldn't, which is why bikes travel for free on Citilink in Melbourne. All the toll points on this tollway have front shooting cameras. But most speed cameras in Vic get you both ways. Aside from the occasional fixed front shot on the Ring Road. But they are currently offline.

The Westgate Bridge fixed cams will hit you front on.

A lot of members from other forums (nissansilvia.com in particular) have actually been targeted because of something they wrote or displayed on the net, with their number plates visible.

People have recieved visits from cops with a list of their mods printed out directly from forums, or for doing burnouts and posting vids, etc.
