Moving abroad and taking the GT

Hello lovers of the blue oval. I am looking at a job in New Zealand and if it works out I will want to take my Second love the GT with me. I could get quotes from people who do this professionally but I could hire a container, pack it myself and arrange shipping at less cost to me. Any one have any ideas or tips and or contacts

A bit of a long shot but you never know whos out there with the right advice.

Personally I'd let the Professionals handle it, just make sure you have plenty of insurance sorted out.......shipped a new Regency Red Jaguar XJ6 from England to NZ back in 1976, left England absolutely spotless, arrived in NZ scratched, dented etc and in a right pitiful state, cost a fortune to get it all fixed up.

Didn't cost much a few years ago.

Check the RACV magazine, a couple of dedicated car shipping companies.

No mechanical changes need be made to your car if your going to register it in NZ, though take the triangle.

If you pick the right people it can be done without damage - although expect at least some damage to your chassis rails from when it is lifted up.

Isn't their a passenger ship/ferry that goes their?? I'd check that first, might save yourself some money and get a second honeymoon in with your first love lol

Yeh I am sure there are ways to do it yourself (not as in physically take it over yourself - unless you do a james bond style conversion on the GT and put it in the water!)

A friend got me to drop off his SS (I know I know) commodore to a company here at Brisbane Wharves and they put it in a container and shipped it over.

I do recall he got slapped with high costs because it was deemed a luxury vehicle. Yep - an SS!

Nah it was to do with being a V8. Honest he paid a packet in duty or some form of tax.

You will certainly be up for it also with the GT.

If you get it put in an individual container there'd be no lifting involved, it'd be driven into the container, strapped down and driven out at the other end wouldn't it?

Its quite possible that you are right but one question, how long had he owned it prior to shipping it.

Yes I found a company that will pack it ship it for 2500 and then there is some expenses at the other end with MAF which tatal about 500

You do have a point, Melbourne is great and trust me its not the sheep that atract me, more the money which is not good but not bad either when you consider the tax is less and the location is supurb (Wiahi) Just south of the coromandle penishula. Great spot and even better fishing. In a nut shell its a way of life. I hope there are not sheep underground.

Check with the furniture removalist that is moving you, depending on how much you have to move, they may be able to put the car into the container with your furniture.Have done it a number of times when I was in the industry.

I did it years ago, the car was packed into a container with all our other worldly goods. The tasman is still the most expensive stretch of water in the world...... But your car is worth it, so do it. You will probably be restricted in selling the car over there for a year or two, but what the hell, NZ roads are GT car freindly, although the speed limits are not....... I think that their fuel is a bit dodgy as well. Worth keeping am eyey on what you put in your tank.

Working at the Waihi Gold Mine aye, Waihi is a cool little town and you have the Coromandel to the north & the Bay Of Plenty to the south.... beautiful, sure you'll love it it's a great part of the country.... and importing your car for that price is a no brainer :voldar02:

I'd take any place in NZ over the Melborne rat race, man so much green!

Outbackjack is right definately good roads for car and bike enthusiasts... but there wont be much room on some roads for your beautiful road hogging sized GT... and the fuel when i was last there was 1.43, 98ron was 1.52!

Mate I am from NZ, been in oz for near 81 yrs. I don't realy care too much about the fuel price either. Fuel in the UK is $2.40 AU roughly, you get use to it or you just live with it. I like my V8 too much to worry about fuel prices other wise I would drive a mini like my girl does.

Yes correct on all acounts. I use to fish out of whitianga. A nice part of the world. and if it goes well I will be there. Its a bit of a gamble becuase the mine runs a very narrow vein and I guess while the prices are good its a workable project but if price of gold drops too far it will cut its life pretty quickly. Alot of mines in Aus like that too which have only opened due to the good price. Trouble there is its the only one apart from Macreas flat in the south and even they run a tight ship. I searched the net and made a couple of calls and found that price, pretty ok I thought.

Was just stirrin' brother hehe haven't been there apart from spendin 4 hrs stuck in the airport about 13 years ago on the way to LA. However, the Mrs and I are huge LOTR maniacs so we will be going there in May next year for the tour. I am hoping to meet the big fella Sauron...

I was thinking of that but advised againts it. If it was just any car maybe but a GT, noway and if it were just any car I would sell and not worry about the hastle. Having said that I am sure where there is a will you find a way.

u should ask the member with the camaro ( rayman i think??)in the project section. he got it shipped from the states in a container and it was sealed i think. anyway he should be able to point u in the right direction.
