pull the dipstick if you have one.
if not, off with the pan.

no & no ...
BTRs have no dip sticks, as they are a fully sealed unit there is a filler hole on the side of the gbox, where you can check the level of the fluid. u can also take a sample from there to check colour of the fluid. to change the fluid you will need to remove the pan and then refill the gbox through the filler hohle.

All the ELs have dipsticks.
On the rare occasion, AUs have dipsticks. Mine does.

What are ELs then? I thought Ford had been using BTRs since the EA days? (i could well be wrong)
My current box definitely is a BTR. There are two types. One with the filler hole and the other one with no filler hole, but with a dipstick. Yes it is a replacement auto.

AFAIK later model EL hybrids used the sealed units ... from then on it's No dipstick.
(Have seen someone use an EF auto trans in an AU though as a replacement .. this had a dipstick in place). All the 4-speeds were BTR boxes from memory. Either use TQ95 or 95LE transmission fluid suited for Ford 4-speed autos ... it's a must.

Some people have done conversions to add the dipstick. I remember seeing a thread on it somewhere.
Perhaps that's been done on yours? GK

I'd wager that the AU has just had an EF/EL transmission fitted. The dipsticks started disappearing in late EFs... but you know what ford are like when it comes to consistency with things like this. Quote:
Ever seen a BTR transmission that's been run on DexIII? Its the stuff nightmares are made of.

I had a 96 EL I6 with a BTR auto & had no dipstick
I was told it was done to stop the incorrect fluid from being added as they used a very specific type and mixing them caused problems Cheers Autocade |

Theres a 16mm bolt on the right hand side of the transmission, u cant really check it. What to do is start the car with your foot on the brake and handbrake up go through the gears, then with the car running take out the 16mm bolt and start filling up until fluid starts coming back out of the hole. Put the bolt back in, tighten it & its full.

I got my auto flushed and serviced a couple of months ago, so I thought I'd check the fluid level, well I took the bolt out (car was warm, not running) and fluid spewed out! I'm talking a decent amount, but less than half a litre I'd say. Surprised the hell out of me, I thought it'd be low if anything. I assume the guy refilled it when it was cold, I can't think how else this would be the case.
While I'm at it, has anyone used auto additive in their AU BTR? One of my mates reckons the lucas additive is magic, but that's in a nissan. The guys at supercheap (and on the bottle) say it's suitable for any transmission type and transmission fluid, but I'm still wary. Should I add it or not? It's meant to improve shifting a fair bit. |

Nah ... don't put additive in the auto ... there is no need for it ... just keep the auto serviced regularly and it will be fine.
