Question Preferred Brake Pad

What is the pad of choice, and why?

I do not know what sort I am wearing now. They stop us no probs but they are certainly messy and have a tendency to squeak a bit.

Alot of ppl will say bendix. I find them a bbit on the hard side myself & use ferodo gp's

I personally like Ferodo Formula's although they do make a bit of noise and dust.

Bendix pads have gotton worse over the years with noise and squeal so when i put my new pbr calipers on the front they came with pads. They dont make half as much noise as the bendix, have a lower metal content{visible to eye}, and they have a better pedal feel. The pbr pads come with an anti squeal material on them where as the bendix have black paint???

I also really like Ferodo Formulas (aka Ferodo TS2000).

If I remember correctly, they cost a little more than the premo Bendix pads but are sooo much better. Also, from my experience, brake dust and noise when cold are the comprimises you need to make for very good brake pads.

For me, the noise and dust is no drama at all, but some folks completely wig out about that sort of thing.

Im interested in people answers to this one. Ive had a bastard of a tme getting nice brake pads; im tried pretty much all of the Bendix pads (standard, Advanced, Ultimate, HD) and they have left me underwhelmed, especially since Asbestos was banned from use and they stopped making MetalKings.

I might try Ferrodo stuff next time, as ive had no success with Bendix and were not that impressed with Bosch (they were cheap though)

If you do, make sure you dont get confused with the Ferodo Excel. The Excel is not a performance brake pad, and is priced accordingly.

You want the Ferodo Formula's, also known as Ferodo TS2000, and they are priced between $160-200 depending on where you buy (brake specialist being cheaper, Repco being a rip-off).

Like AUTickford I have PBR calipers which came with pads. I found these pads a bit noisey and tried Ferodo Formulas. They stopped great but way to dusty and I got sick of cleaning my wheels every day!! Now have new PBR performance pads which have a slightly different compound than my original ones and they are brilliant. Little dust, no noise, just take some warming up to perform. More expensive than standard pads but worth it. Get to know someone at a store (even Repco Xr8ute!!) and you will pay far less than retail!!!

Also Ferodo pads in order of performance are: Formula, Excel, Target, FT and GP. I have Excel pads in my BA ute and my wife's Astra and I think they are excellent everday pads that out perform anything from Bendix or Bosch. They have a heat rating that comes very close to some 'performance pads'.

That's my opinion anyway!

I would personally recommend the EBC greenstuff pads, they stop from dead cold and work well in excess of 500deg, and are 100% guaranteed not to dust. They are around the $100-200 depending on where you get a price.

I had Bendix pads put in a few months back and never again! At first I thought they were quite good but recently found out how bad they are - they don't pull up in an emergency! Well, in my case, they've let me down on 2 extremely close calls.

I've never s**t myself so much in my life. They just don't stop the car in an emergency situation. Won't ever use them again. For normal braking, Bendix are fine for me but when it comes to emergencies, they're just not up to it. Not in my car.

Will use Ferodo's next time and I know they create brake dust (which I can't stand) but I'll throw on the dust covers if it gets too annoying lol ( sorry Whoosh but the bling may have to be covered up :P )

Can anyone tell me where to get some greenstuff pads from?

I vowed never to touch ferodo again after i wore through a set of GP's in under 5,000km my CORONA.

At the moment, i have Lucas Ultimates (approx 165 an axle). Couldnt be happier. While they dust a lot, they have lasted me in excess of 40,000km (still going strong). I tow heaps (anything from 200kg to max rating @ 1800). My tyres are lasting me less than the pads.

If youre looking at any brake upgrade, go the slotted and good pads. Bendix ultilmates tend to fade at above 140kph pretty badly. If you do any sort of circuit work, youll see what i mean.

I think you get what you pay for in brakes

yeah i have lucas pads as well and there great. Mine are only dusty on the front i think its because the front rotors are slotted.

Gotta admit I love the Lucas pads I have in at present they've gone from squealling like stuck pigs to dead quiet, a little bit of dust but damn good brake pad.

ebay, a couple of weeks ago I got a set of RDA slotted rotors and EBC green stuff pads. The pads were $119. See the EF link in my sig.

I've got RDA slotted and EBC greenstuffs all round on my ride. On the last (non AFF) ford cruise, my series 1 AU single piston brake system was still going strong while about five of the guys in BA's ran out of brakes.

Mind you AU's do handle better than B's anyway.
They will only dust if you really hammer them for a few hours on a hard charging cruise.
Rotor chew - not yet. Only shaved the fronts once so far.

Yeah as has been said the rotor wear isnt an issue, and for normal driving the dust is nil but use them hard and i guess anything will wear and a cover your rim, They are extremly responsive right from the first press of the stop pedal.

General comments are to stay away from bendix and i fully agree. Havent really tried many other brands but ill try anything apart from that brand :baby bott

I use Ferodo Formulas! Very Dusty an noisey but they pull up very very well. I havent been able to fad them out yet and i dont even have slotted rotors, so there you go!! If you want a good pad that wont let you down go for the formulas but i do say dust and noise is an issue. but if they pull up who cares, right!

I was finding the Bendix CTs good to use at first ... even doing courier work in Sydney ... but now it looks like they are slowly getting worse.

I have slotted RDAs all-round (twin piston Series II front brakes) ... so might look at swapping the pads to Greenstuff ... although I have heard issues with Greenstuff killing rotors ... I really don't want that to happen.

I guess next service I will check the condition of the rotors and pads ... then make my mind up if to change pads or not (even if the current ones have plenty left on them).

I know Joe at Crescent Motors in Liverpool gets the EBC pads in.

I am after better brake performance ... especially when there's weight in the back and I need to pull up in Sydney traffic quickly ... I don't want to hit thhe anchors and "hope" to stop.

I love EBC pads, all compounds. And I dissagree about them being heavy on discs. Of course they will be a bit harsher than a standard pad but I have found with my BA that they have been very decent and I run them in a few e and a series customers cars and have found them to be very resonable for a metallic pad.Plus the stopping performance for street applications is hard to beat. If your in melbourne I am an ebc supplier so you can pm me for prices ect.

If they are no good in an emergency, why are they still on the car? If they're that bad you should get them changed now, not after the pad material has worn down some more!

Excels are not a bad pad. I had them all round last time, but put on Formulas up front this time just for the heck of it. For daily driving I don't really think the Formulas are worth the extra $$. They might have better fade resistance if you are on them all the time if your are doing lap dashes or something, but there is nothing wrong with the Excels.

If anything, the Excels are better when cold, and can go to work straight away. The Formulas seem to like a bit of heat in them. So if you pull out of your driveway on a frosty morning and the neighbor's dog runs in front of your car, you might be better with the Excels.

I drove from Sydney to Southport a couple of nights ago. It was the wee hours of the morning so I was hooking into it. The Formulas were very good, but I think the Excels would have been just as good.

Only problem with the Excels is they can be pretty noisy. Between the Excels and the AU handbrake you really don't need a stereo - just wind down your window and there is a full orchestra outside. The Formulas are a quieter pad.
