Question It's easy as 1 2 3 ?

Ive been told differnet stories about the 1-2-3-Drive in an Automatic car, some people say its okay, and other seem to disagree. I drive a EL Falcon 4lrt Auto if i was to do this on a regular basis would it cause any damage to my Auto Trans and gear box?

Thanks in advance, :

Paul

Changing up will not hurt the transmission at all. Changing down "shocks" the trans a bit as the revs are not matched and the change isnt smooth.

i do it fairly often, my trans is still ok.
as said, its really only if your downshifting from higher RPM's that would do more, but even that hasnt made any effect on my trans, i was doing it loads at winton

My friends mechanic told him for city driving to leave the car in 3rd. EL Sapphire.
He was told this would improve his fuel economy and increase the life of the tranny.

a shift kit is used to firm up the changes.. using one when downshifting will shock the auto more.

im pretty sure that shifting from 1, 2, 3 and then drive is used for towing etc. It probably wont hurt your trans but lets say if your doing 50km in 2nd and want to drop a gear that will lag hurt the trans alot as its not design for that. I dont do it often though...........

Been doing it for a long time since I put in the BA and the BF shifter, and no problems to report.

what would happen if you downshifted a auto enough to cause a compression lockup??...would the box handle that....

my t5 solenoid was on its way out, and it was so bad the car would chirp from 1st to 2nd (not power, just a severe shock). i took it to my transmission mechanic who said, until i get it fixed to shift manually from 1st to 2nd at around 3000rpm to save the life of the box. apparently it would have been enough to split the box in half lol. i asked him about his thoughts about manually shifting, and he said going up is fine, just down gearing causes more wear. best is to stop the car and then go back to 1st. not worth it imo, unless you got an awesome sounding 8.

save the torque convertor. at 60km/h the convertor will lock up but if you just increase throttle position, it will unlock straight away. so if you keep doing this it will decrease the life of the convertor heaps.

with the 4 speed btrs u cant cause comp lockup, u could be at 80 and slam it in to first and it shouldnt go into 1st untill u are at a speed that it doesnt go over the rev limiter. thats my experience when i accidently slipped it into first at 70-80 trying to slow down hard for one reason or another

so it doesn't hurt it, all is good, its regularly serviced? Then your very next sentence says your auto is clapped out, slips in gears and is generally stuffed.

Do you see the contradiction here?

the sprag clutch in these boxes isnt very strong and really cops it on downchanges. going up is ok but down is bad - you will end up with no engine braking at all once the sprag clutch dies.

Do it with my C4 all the time. Lots of fun with the ratchet shifter. Only problem is the ratchet is the exact opposite of my BA XR8. I've gone down instead of up a couple of times by mistake.

My BTR has been custom built to handle 600hp.. breaking it is not a concern of mine.
However with a stock BTR the downshift does damage it. Slowly, bit by bit, it does do damage. Saying it is fine while driving with an auto that is showing classic signs of wear and tear (regardless of if you did it or not) is either a) ignorant or b) wishful thinking. The auto does not match the revs on downshift, the auto is "shocked". No different to reving to around 1500rpm and dropping it into D every time you drive. It wont kill it immediatly but it will wear it out faster than normal.
