Default Insurance Quotes

Its insurance time again. Being a bit unimpressed with my current company's quote of $1,390, I thought I'd shop arround.

First call: AAMI - $1,858.....LMAO...I don't think so!!

Second call, Site Sponsor, Shannons

The Shannons guy was really helpful, but warned me "Umm, we're not really competitive on a lot of mainstream type cars...."

Shannons Quote...$1,056

That'll do me!

probably not what he is insuring probably his age. It costs wifey and me less than 500 a year to insure BA XR6 but my sons insurance on a 98 laser for a quarter the value is 1300 as he is only 19.

Ah. I did'nt think about that. Sometimes being old has its good points. (just under $400 for an AUII Fairlane)

Have you tried insuring the Laser in YOUR name with your son as the main driver?

I'm a very young and irresponsible 45yo. The car is a standard-ish 5.0 AU Ghia, with the usual mods (intake, suspension, wheels, DBAs). Wife doesn't drive. No kids of driving age.

Situated in inner-west Sydney - premiums are usually a bit higher than you would expect here.

I'm yet to get a quote under $2000 for my ute.As soon as I tell some of them that I have changed the exhaust, let alone the other mods. they don't want to know about it.Shannons has been the dearest to date at the princely sum of $2600.I'm so sick of Sydney, every thing you do here you get shafted.Have to start looking for a job somewhere else.

yea sydney is F**#KED when it comes to insurance, i pay $1300 for my stock EL, im with nrma, im also 19 years old, ive never had an accident and ive never been booked by a cop, i havent even been pulled over by a cop yet.
I reckon everyone should get cheap insurance when they first get their licence, and it should only go up if you have an accident and its your fault or if you lose your licence.
this way those who are good drivers dont have too pay the huge premiums we have too at the moment.

You probably find it would still be cheaper to go Just Cars. Just Cars quote their premiums by the youngest driver. You will also get your own insurance rating. Just Cars also allow any mods so long as they are legal and you inform them. Shannons didn't want to know me.

It cost me $3355 a year with Just Cars. I'm 19, no fines, claims etc. Car is a 2003 WRX insured for $27,000. Mods are stereo-$1000 and wheels-$3840.

If I was to insure with NRMA(I believe RACV and NRMA are owned by the same parent-IAG) they wanted over $4000 with my mum as the owner and me as a driver

I pay for my near stock EF 6cyl falcon $1200 comprehensive with nrma as a designated driver and under the age of 25.

Recently i got a few quotes: Nrma:XR6T- $2800
:AUIII XR8 - $3700

JustCar:XR6T - $2200

AAMI: *The phone goes dead*

These quotes are for comprehensive cover with a clean record for under the age of 25.

I got quoted $1650.00 through just car, rating 5 18y/o male with clean history. Car is an AUII falcon sedan with 19's, bodykit, lowered suspension and an exhaust listed as main mods.
I ended up going through RACQ with the car under my mums name, and me listed as a regular driver which is good because its like $600 per year, and i am still earning a no claim bonus.

Way to go. I've been with them for the last 6 or so years. Definitely the cheapest by far. (see post 6)

Some free advise,

Money's not everything when it comes to insurance. Sure you may pay more at NRMA, RACV, GIO,AAMI etc but keep in mind that they are the major players in the industry and they have the claims reserves to pay all of thier potential claims.

Remember that smaller company's offer cheaper insurance, but be wary of the fine print and the level of cover that you receive, the last thing you want is to be bitten on the **** come claims time.

Always check who UNDERWRITES the insurance that you take out, ie who is responsible for insureing that funds are there to pay a claim.

Yes, I work for an insurance company, but I can give an objective view on the industry.

When you say all of my mods what do you mean... how many, what are they and do you have it writing? AAMI (and most others) are very strict on mods and the worry is you get a different verbal response every time you call them. I thought 4 mods (basic or otherwise) was the limit.

Just made another call.

QBE $860.

So at the moment its:

- AAMI $1,898
- GIO $1,390
- Shannons $1,056
- QBE $860

For the same car, same 45yo driver.

I may well still go with Shannnons The QBE guy had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned a Tickford snorkel, and it never got factored into the quote, not that it should make any difference. I just don't want the insurance voided on a technicality.

gio wanted over $2300, aami wasn't much better and allianz wouldn't touch me

The value of your car is close to irrelevant when calculating premiums. (A $20 datsun can do as much damage as a $40,000 WRX when they hit a Mercedes Benz)

Your relative risk is the dominating factor - this is calculated from your driving history, TYPE of car (ie: probability of your model being in a crash, not its value), and your age.

Which makes me wonder - if all you XR6T and XR8 owners are so damn good drivers, why are the premiums so high. Me thinks it is because you crash your cars more. So do the insurers.
