Default DVD Recorders - Soniq?

My DVD player packed it in so though I would replace it with a DVD recorder. Must have at least a 250GB hard drive and be under $500. Had a look at the shops on the weekend and most DVD Recorders with a 250GB HDD are roughly $800. Audio dosnt matter as I have a seperate Dolby Digital reciever.

However JB Hifi have a brand called Soniq and it had new 250GB HDD DVD Recorders for $355. The same ones are on Ebay for about $400 + $50 postage (and idiots are acually bidding on them!)

So does anyone have any experience with the brand Soniq - is it made in the same factory for instance as other good brands? Normally I am a brand name only type of guy but can't get past that low low price.

I recently bought a Soniq DVD Player from JB on special for $69 I think. The only complaint I have is that the remove has to be pointed from the pront of the unit as the infra red received is recessed into the face plate and wont pick it up from too far to the side. Pretty minor complaint really! Other than that its a very good unit, comparable to others I've owned that set me back a few hundred dollars. It plays all my backup copies of dvd's too, which some of the cheaper units wont do. ;)

Mate in my opinion Panasonic DVD recorders are the way to go. Ive had two in the past, one without the hard drive when they first came out and for the past 2 years one with an 80GB hard drive. They are REALLY CHEAP now compared to when i baught one. Even if your on a budget see if you can muster up the extra cash to get the brand name.... Im not sure what your knowledge is of dvd recorders but the biggest problem with the technology is that there are two types of DVD media.. DVD-R and DVD+R . Generally most recorders are DVD-R and some do both.
anyway just something for you to think about.

Crazy coincidence – I was just looking at this brand today on eBay. I bought a few cheap DVD players in my time and I thought I might upgrade to a brand name this time, seeing as the hard drive is important and I’d like features like time shift etc.

Anyway be interested to hear others comments on Soniq.
