Hi all, it seems from previous questions that the AU3 takes longer to warm up due to a bleed hole in the thermostat, which allows the radiator to warm slowly before the thermostat opens thus preventing damage to the plastic header tanks. Unfortunately this has the side effect of the car using a truckload more fuel as it warms up which is the period that the car is driven most. So, armed with all this knowledge, is there a workaround to get the car to warm up quickly (as my work BA ute does, for example) while preventing potential radiator damage? I'm sick of using 16-17 litres/100km!

Ouch, my AU2 had the radiator mod done by ford as you described to prevent damage but uses about 14-15lt/100km with all cold town usage, 10lt/100km open road cruise. Try talking to a couple of radiator specilatists, might be able to install a better setup which might pay for itself, else email one of the sponsors that do the flash tuner and see if they can lean out that cold rich runnning period.
Ultimately it probably comes down to how long you plan to keep the car, is any outlay cost going to pay for itself? or will it be traded/sold within the next year or so? Last edited by sbcb; 04-08-2006 at 06:21 PM. |

How long roughly is it taking to warm up ? , just makes me wonder if im in the same boat with my auII , mine seems to take about 10 to 15 mins worth of driving to warm it up / which mainly pee's me off in the morning because its freezing cold in the car and the heater blows cold air until the engine has warmed up ! - which by this time i'm already usually at my destination.
Is yours taking around this long to warm up ? , shorter time? , longer time ? , i'de like to hear how long it should usualy take for the auII xr6 vct to warm up . cheers.

My AU2 V8 has auto climate control and it takes about 3 km before the heater starts and blows out warm air.
What I do notice is that on cold morning even when up to normal operating temp it still leaves a vapour cloud when taking off from the lights. It does run on gas so I don't know whether this is normal or not!!!! |

Fit a brass radiator the replace the thermostat. The hole wasn't drilled to protect the plastic tanks, it was to protect the aluminium core.

I let mine warm up for 5 mins or so in the morning but it still takes bout 10km of driving to warm it up. i might try unpluging the fans tomorro morning for the 5 min warm up and see what happens. I never use the heater in the morning because the engine runs cooler when the heater tap is open.

Ok , I just though i would mention the following !, after reading this thread and having the same sorta problems with my auII xr6 vct taking so long to warm up...
I have been so busy latelly and haven't had time to give my car some TLC ... I decided this afternoon to check all the fluid levels. My powersteering fluid was low and also my coolant level was nearlly down to minimum. I topped up both the powersteering fluid and the coolant. Since topping these up i noticed today that my car actually warmed up quicker than usual !!!! ( with more coolant ! .. strange ! ) , and also the heater blows out warm air now even when the car is cold !. So it seems , even though you would think / i though anyways ( old school thinking , which im still working my way out of ! ) that coolant would make the stuff cooler and take even longer for the heater to warm up ( it would with a an old school 302/351 anyways ) , but is seemed to make my car run cooler but also made my heater work propperlly again before the car even heats up . strange .. lol .. but hey it worked , im ok now .. cheers I also noticed that my car is kicking back gears much better up hill etc etc .
