I am going to go for a drive on Putty Road tommorrow with the misses and was wondering if anyone could give me some directions as to finding the road from parramatta. I understand it is close to windsor road?
Also anyone who has done the drive could you recomend any good picnic spots? Plan on doing the whole trip to Singleton. |

Look on www.riversideoaks.com.au .... and look how to get there .. it's shows pretty much how to get to Windsor from Parramatta.
But I live at East Kurrajong ... so I am 5.5km from Putty Rd myself. Take a map ... can get a little confusing out the back of Broke and Wollombi if you don't know it.

If you see Winford Ford ... you are going the right way When you get through McGraths Hill and head to the traffic lights at Windsor ... head up the hill and straight through the roundabout ... then cross the bridge and hook around to the right ... you are then on the road to Wilberforce and that is pretty much Putty Rd.

Out to Windsor and across the Nepean River.
Its many tears since I've travelled the Putty but there used to be a nice picnic area at Colo River and again further on at what used be be called "the ten mile". If you go right to the top there's a little place before Singleton (can't rem the name) that used to be great for a picnic. |

can get narrow in a few spots ... is a fun road ... can get bumpy in spots ... and some mid-corner bumps can get a little unsettling ... but there's some fast sweepers along the way ... and most of the advisory speed signs are near correct as well ... getting further north there's about 20 kays of winding road too ... bikes love the road ... and cops cruise it cos of the sports bikes.

Also ... you are not far from the wineries as well when you get to Broke Rd up there ... some top eatery spots and nice scenery as well ... busy too. But it is a great day's outing.

Caltex at Wilberforce on the left currently has LPG for 46.9c/L (filled there this morning). I'd fill there before continuing on further. Also there's servos are Singleton and other towns that have LPG as well. From Wilberforce to Singleton it's near on 200km.

Beaut driving through there mate, always nice cold air through there. If you are going through anytime just on dusk watch out for the bloody roos though. Keep your wits about you one some of the corners, semi's sometimes decide that they own a corner and makes things interesting to say the least.
Enjoy the drive. Tim

Yeah the trucks love the road .... and be careful on some of the tight windy sections around the cliffs .... blind corners and lazy drivers on your side of the road make it interesting.

It depends on driving style .... and also traffic ... and weather too.
Also depends on stops along the way ... most of the middle section is 100km/h ... but the 20 kays of winding roads are 2nd and 3rd gear corners. From Windsor it's approx 1.5 - 2 hours to the wineries on my last trip ... can't remember exactly ... had the missus with me as well ... so the driving was quite tame.

Nice ... good that you got it services properly.
I'll be out around McGraths Hill around 8am ... as I have to drop the Territory in to Winford Ford for a Service .... and will have the ute with me as well ... so if you see a white AU ute with massive driving lights and courier signage on the side with dark tint and Territory wheels ... that's me ... oh EGA54D green plates on LPG ... definitely me.

Im somewhat of an expert in this case ;)
Having lived in the Hawkesbury area for more than half my life And out near Singleton before that. Mechan1k summed it up pretty correctly. Jump on Windsor Rd heading west from Parra. Drive past Winford Motors & McMaccas, Maybe top up your LPG at the Mobil on the way through, drive into Windsor straight through the lights and up to the round about and and head down to the Windsor Bridge and over the Hawkesbury River and onto Wilberforce once your out of Wilbo, your on the Putty and drive on till you hit Singleton, if your going that far. Theres a nice Halfway Roadhouse on the Putty(Sort of halfway to Singleton) Not sure what its like now, its been a while since ive been there... Great drive, lots of nice twisties... More fun on two wheels than four : Quote:
The Nepean River runs through Penrith(Penriff)... In the Nepean Area. They join up somewhere near Yarramundi im pretty sure EDIT: Just realised he would have already been there, done that... :P

thanks for all the reply's guys
Day went very well got onto Putty Rd top drive there all the way through to singleton and then looped back and went to Newcastle for lunch. All up clocked up alittle over 500km but was a great drive & the falcon went very well. First time i have done a big drive in a falcon and i must say it would have to be the most confortable car i have been in yet. Plus having come from owning a Jeep the cruise control works a dream unlike the Cherokee which jerks you back and forth and goes through fuel like nothing else. |

Another word of warning too guys, watch out for maniac motorcyclists. They can appear on your side of the road around a blind corner!
Top road though, my old escort boiled the oil in the gearbox on that road.

All this talk of the Putty Road has me thinking I might organise a few days off and go for a drive down to Sydney (via the Putty, as well) |
