Vortex 98

Called into my local Woolworths/Caltex servo the other day and discovered 'Vortex 98'... assistant said they only had it for a week. Is this commonly available now, has anyone been using it and what opinions if any?

Available in other states for a while. Not sure how long. Not sure if any good.

I use it in my Focus. I think it runs better than Optimax. Gives me some more grunt I think. But with it costing 10c more than 91RON and 5c more than 95RON, I dont think its really worth it. I stick with 95RON now unless I feel really happy and I want to take the car for a fang.

I only ever use BP ultimate or Caltex vortex in both the XR8 and Fiesta. I have crunched the milage numbers and have decided that it only costs 3 or 4 cents per litre more due to the longer distance per tank. And both cars drive noticably(SP?) better on these fuels. I cant really tell the diference between BP and caltex..... Both are good.

One would HOPE it might become available... But who knows.... Then i will get a fuel card through my old man...

In Brisbane Caltex Charges 7c premium for 95 PULP.... Same with most BP's....

I run the Optimax Extreme 100 in my car... just changed over. It seems to idle nicer than with the previously used BP Ultimate 98... and in the XR6T's, my tuner (Nizpro) tells me it's worth about 10rwkw... it allows for about another 3 degrees of timing to be added... which is always good.

How long have you run it? I would be interested on your comments after a few tanks. I run BP Ultimate, but always lookin' for that little extra...

I'll let you know mate... so far, so good. Though I've re-tuned the car to suit as well. Simon from Nizpro put me on to it, it is all he runs in his ute (450rwkw ish daily driver), I'm currently on my 2nd tank, and outwardly it looks expensive because it's 17c more expensive than 91RON unleaded, so it's 7c more expensive than BP Ultimate (which I ran for nearly 6 months), but with one of the Coles vouchers it works out to be only 3c more expensive than Ultimate which is f@&k all if it means another 10rwkw...

Caltex 98 has been around for ages, it is one of the two fuels I use.
However, it is only good to use if your engine needs the higher octane!

Vortex 98 only recently became available at the Nerang Caltex where I can use Woolworths vouchers. I'm on my fourth tank in my F6 and haven't noticed any difference from the BP Ultimate I used previously.

Not in Qld... It has been in some southern states... But only every so often available here. Would be good if it became a permanant fixture.

I have started to use it in my Corolla and it has made a difference. Yesterday it broke traction at 6000rpm in first it has never done that before.

The 2ZZGE in my Corolla has a set of Hi Lift cams that kick in at 6000rpm when this happens the character of the engine changes big time. So for the first time the front wheels broke traction when it hit 6000rpm. Maybe it was a combination of a cold day and the Vortex 98.

RACV tested 95 and 98 RON.
They found a FALCON has a 1.7% improvement on 95 RON and 1.5 % on 98 RON. Compared to 91 RON.
With a FIESTA 1.7% improvement on 95RON and 2.5% ON 98 RON, compared too 91 RON.

So you've seen it come and go over time... over how long? I got the impression it was here to stay by the servo guy.

Mobil has also started selling SYNERGY 6000 and 8000 in Queensland since last week. Any comments on these fuels ?

I can make a backwards comparison..... Does that make sense? I have only ever used 98 in the XR8 since new in dec 05. The ONLY time I had to use 91 was a couple of months ago up to Borroloola in the gulf country. Very remote area. Nothing but 91 could be bought. On the trip back down south, the difference was noticable. The car was "kinda flat" it would still get up and go, it seemed just a little reluctant to do it. Perhaps a bit like a filthy air cleaner. And the range on that tank was close to 60k's less. Needless to say I was glad to get some proper fuel into it again. I cant really comment on city driving where you are constantly drudging from traffic snarl to traffice snarl, but on the open road there are definately advantages to the higher octane.

BTW bp 98 is about 1.89 a litre in the Alice.

BP Ultimate is actually the same as Mobil Synergy 8000.

In Victoria, Vortex 98 starts its life from another terminal.

Mobil and BP share a joint facility in Melbourne. It’s all basically the same stuff loaded into different tankers.

I have used it a few times and noticed that I got more k's out of a tank than with the regular Vortex. That was around the city though, so I didn't get to take it out for a longer trip.
I work for Woolworths anyway, so with the staff discount, it works out about the same cost as for Vortex.

it's been in noosa for at least the last 5 years! the old ltd seems to love the stuff and gets good milage so it's all i use

I dont usually fill up a Caltex, but over the years, you occasionally see a Vortex 98 pump... here and there, I find it funny, that Noosa has it as well... Good that its available, but strange at the same time.... You would think if they have it one place, they would have it in all... Go figure. Would be nice if they do bring it into Qld as a permanant pump...

i was under the impression ultimate & synergy were the same

Caltex are in the process of setting up the loading system for the new Vortex 95. It’s basically Shell 95 with a different label. This will be available soon.

Ive been using Vortex 98 for nearly two years now , its fine for my purpouse.

I try to use Caltex as much as I can. Only because out of all the oil companies, caltex keeps the most ammount of $$ in Australia. I try to buy Australian as much as humanly possible.

Actually no it hasn't. There are two different vortex products. The one tha has been around for the last few years is 95ron. It is the same stuff as the BP and Mobil premiums.

The only 98 ron products in the sunny coast is Ultimate, Optimax (not 100) and Boost 98 with ethanol, unless of course, there is a new Vortex 98 just started.

I actually filled up with it today. was 148.9c though with my staff discount was the same price as the 95ron Vortex.

I'll have to take it for a run down the coast on my next day off.
