Default good power inverter

hey guys
question about power inverters, ive heard good and bad ... bad parts is that they can catch on fire......

how many watts is ok for powering a console? or a mini tv? or a computer?

I saw a deal at autobarn for a power jumpstart kit and a power inverter (300watts) for 120$ ( or near around that price) Is that a good price or is that stuff no good?

cheers

That Perticular 300w PowerInverter can run a PS2, N64, etc quite easy. Ive installed a few PS2's in a couple of cars recently using a 300w inverter that we carry and I think is included in that package

im not sure about running a computer off that one in perticular, id be more included to at least the 600 for a PC if you wanted to play it safe. It all comes down to what your wanting to do with it.

A friend of mine had a 300watt inverter and tried to run a strobe light off it. he now runs a 600watt. guess what happened to the old one?

i've got a 300watt inverter in my car, running a PC.
can't remmeber what brand it is but i got it from kmart.
the internal fan seems to have failed (or i can't hear it anymore), but the inverter has been flawless

actually a point of interest.
my car PC, is running off a 95watt PSU.
(P4 1.7, so not exactly an "old" comp)
300watt is plenty for a PC.

Cheap inverters have a very dirty waveform... I.E. if you ran a TV off of it chances are you would get interference. I would be very hesitant running a pc off it...

And don't even think about running any induction motors off it, ie. angle grinder or a microwave unless it is atleast 1000w.

X-Box's dont like Modified sinewave inverters, all of the ones i have sold for that have come back and they will only run off a Pure sinewave .

I can understand the angle grinder in an e-series, but a mircrowave?!? Would that be to fix a bung flux capacitor or something?

what has come back TIKFD6? the x-box or the invertor? pure sine waves can be achieved with the right filtering. but only the top of the line invertors would achieve this i would think as it takes alot to get a pure sine wave.

I bought a new playstation slimline, it was sweet.

Had an external powersupply (hence the smaller console) which ran at 8.5v dc.

Used a 5A regulator to get it going (about $30) and was sweet.

Got sick of it lol.

I wonder if you could modify an xbox and put straight dc to somewhere on the board, bypassing the 240transformer?

There are 2 main types of inverters. One is a symmetrical sign wave, the other is a modified sign wave, which is designed for higher efficiency. With modified sign wave inverters, if your load is a transformer you can run into problems and it will get hot. If you go for a symmetrical sign wave you can run anything you want off it, but the efficiency is a lot less. Most quality inverters you will find cheap on ebay are generally 24V which causes a bit of a problem. Most of the cheapies you find are the modified wave form type which does cause problems with certain load types.

EB, the modified sinwave invertors has come back.
Noise has been the biggest problem, and some X-Box's wont start up off Modified ones.

If it statrts and you can live with the noise, go for it.
