Question 4 speed ratios

I want to replace the 2.92 diff (not a 9 inch, the tag says 82DA-4005-EA) in my Variety Bash car with a lower ration, probably a 3.45.

The car has an unidentified 4 speed trans.

First question - how can I identify the transmission?

Second question: How can I identify the gear ratios in the current trans?

I'm hoping that the diff swap will give me a whole extra lower gear, putting new second gear about where first is today but without knowing the ratios I am unsure.

(The car is a 72 Fairlane 351 4 speed manual but I understand both the diff & the trans are from a more recent Falcon.)

Thanks in advance,
Graham

well in my little black book it says asumeing the 4sp is a top loader (linkages on the side) + not a single rail ( shifter fitts strait in to top of ext, housing) the ratios should be Quote: top 1.00:1 third: 1.36:1 second: 1.93:1 first: 2.78:1 reverse:2.78:1
the diff ratios sound like they are from a auto . there were 2 ratios avalible acording to the book 2.93:1 3.25:1 lsd
dont know weather this helps or not , am still looking for my book of ID numbers + codes but ford head office customer service mite help you with that
cheers whoosha .........

The car is in the paint shop now so I will have to wait to check whether it is a top loader or single rail trans. Would single rail ratios be similar?

The car was set up for easy highway cruising hence the high gearing. I'll put a 3.45 or even lower in it o give me lots more punch off the line and make it much easier on steep hills, especially on bush tracks.

Thanks for your help,
Graham

the single rail boxes started poping up mid 70s + had a few different ratios depending what they were hooked up to 6cyl.8cyl. 4.9lt 5.8lt ext, most had id plates on the ext, housing + you should be able to trace from there . from memory 1st to 2nd were simular 3rd being the only variant a bit taller in some
. with a bit of luck you should have the toploader a much tougher box for what you have in mind ,,good luck .....whoosha

No I'm in Brisbane. Trevor Brown has a Bash car in Hervey Bar, LTD I think of the same vintage but he has plenty of other cars too. PM me if you want to be put in touch with Trevor.

3.45/2.93 = 1.17 so it would be about a half-gear worth of change. My ute has a 3.45 diff, in 4th gear it does 3000rpm at 100km/h. Hope this helps you work it out - do you need a really low 1st gear or just a bit more pick-up all round?
