Question Bigpond Modem change

Hi all,
Got a present from Telstra today.
A new cable modem (Motorola SBS101) to replace the Nortel I had for ages.
They says its to make the network more versatile. The Nortel won't work by Feb.
Has anyone else had theirs changed and is there a 'hidden agenda" to the change?

I think the same change happened over here. I certainly know we switched from something to the Motorola surfboard, also with Telstra. I joined just after the switch, but friends of mine had to actually ask them to change it.

I’ve just had Bigpond cable connected and they supplied a Motorola Surfboard modem. My plan is (unlimited) 10 gig wtf, however it’s half price for the first six months and if I don’t need the 10 gig I can downgrade to a smaller amount month by month as required.

Cheers, Danny

I'm on (unlimited) 10 gig wtf etc as well. Always use over 10 gig though (3 teenage kids plus me).

Does anyone know if you can go on to the bigpond site and see how much of your 10 gig wtf you have used?

Big Pond and OptusNet both use Motorola Surfboard cables modems.

The 5101 IS marginally faster both for the user and the installer.

Nice bonus if you got it for free. looks heaps better too.

I've had mine since 2001, on Optusnet Cable. It works perfectly. I have used Bigpond at other people's houses, and I find that the Optus modem is Faster overall.

i have my old optusnet cable modem still lying around here somewhere... possibly security reasons they are ditching the ols USB ones... by any chance are the new modems ethernet only or they prefer setting it up in ethernet mode?

I have just had Telstra Bigpond Broadband Cable installed with the Motorola SB5101 modem and I find it to be very good and pretty fast. Not one problem.
Also on the unlimited download for the first 6 months.

As some may or may not know, the older Nortel based cable modems have a 10mbit ethernet port on them. Up until now this has been quite sufficient as the TFTP Config files sent to the modem only had a 10mbit downstream limit applied.

However, BigPond are planning to directly compete with ADSL2+ using their HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) network. As such, they'll have to raise the limit from 10mbit to 20mbit. Now, you can see where the problem is. If they do this, all the current Nortel modem users are going to be limited by their CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) aka modems.

Modems on their hitlist:

Nortel Networks CM100
Nortel Networks CM115
Motorola Surfboard SB3100

As a general reccommendation to anyone using Cable Internet, don't, for the love of god, use USB. I'd say 80% of all calls recieved by Telstra + Optus Cable internet services are because of slow performance / irratic behavior / disconnection are caused by USB. Just a tip.

Hope this answered some questions.
