Default ICE your mobile phone

Got this in an email. I've ICE'd mine

Following the disaster in London, East Anglican Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency (ICE)" campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston. The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency". In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest. For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.. Don't just think about doing this - pick up your phone and DO IT NOW. Seems like a very good idea, presuming your phone survives what has befallen you!

Wouldn't the paramedics just go to the entry called MUM and ring that?

Who knows? I did ICE a little while ago, just in case... for example, today a car was rounding a corner towards me and was going so fast he almost lost it - and I would've been a goner.

Merrick and Rosso did a small article on this..
What if you mates are Ice Cube and Ice-T... And how would they know your name, will they just rummage through a dead persons belonging.... "Hello, someone had an accident and they have you as their emergency number" "oh ok, Whats there name" "I dunno"... LOL

I love merrick and rosso

I think you're missing the point of 'ICE'. It's a national campaign meaning all ambulance officers will check for ICE in a person's mobile.

Simply, the point of it all is to list 'your' preferred contact in an emergency. I know mine would be my partner first then my sister not my Mum because she isn't 'my' first choice.

Paramedics (in NSW anyway) rarely search through peoples phones to get contact details. They may use a drivers licence to get a name and then when the casualty gets to hospital, they use the Ambulance Service casualty report to track down contact details. (or so I have been told by a Rescue Paramedic)

That said... It can't hurt, and I suggest you forward this around.

Gecko? maybe you could shed some light on how it's done?

Oh jesus I'd have to put my local down as ICE. They'd be devastated... Mainly cos I'm putting the owner's kids through school.

Its a good idea in theory but to be honest I dont like the idea of people I dont know going through my mobile. Fair enough if i was dead but if i was alive I think id rather they just worked on me instead of trying to figure out how to undo the keylock on my Nokia.

Regarding this, ICE would be useless for those with phones that have actual PIN/password requirements!

Regardless of anything, I don't think the "ICE"concept is giving the emergency services enough credit. They do have brains. Its like the terror hotline, pointless, but it might make people feel better.

umm the terror hotline is good because even if u suspect somebody they take it serious. if you called the police they would be like "yeah will look into that when we have SPARE time"
LOL when does that happen

Yeah telstra is supporting this now. They sent me a message today advising me to create an ICE contact in my contact list. I tried to but now when my partner calls me it tells me ICE is calling, even though I created a seperate contact lol

OK I put in "ICE1" "ICE2" "ICE3" ect. in my phone (I actually did it for road accidents rather then acts of terrorism).

However,

now everytime my fiance calls I get "ICE" displaying on my caller ID instead of her name. Last time I checked she wasn't an 80's rapper.

New phones have a emergency contact option in the contact list anyway (not 111 or 000) that serves the exact same purpose, at least my phone does but not everyone will so I suppose it is a good idea, but having ICE coming upwhen a contact rings me will **** me off.

Well I think its a good idea Krissy though I think it would take alot of like minded people[believers] to start to do it [a critical mass] before it would be seen to work and thereby convince the pessimists. Thats how these kind of things normally go.

That is so easy to get around. Store one number as a local number and one as the national number

eg: local might be 0411 123 456
national would be 61 411 123 456

They are both the same number and both will work within Australia.

you can do the same with a landline by just putting the area code on the emergency number or vice versa - depending on where they normally ring you from.

Why would you need the shortform? why not do all numbers as +614xxxxxx
