Hey there,
How many of you guys chirp at least 1st to 2nd during `enthusiastic driving'? In terms of mechanical action I would have thought tire chirping was hard on everything from the clutch to the tyre, but it seems some people even try to do it. What's the deal? Cheers |

Never, I always: clutch in, throttle off, shift gear, revmatch to speed to that gear, clutch out, full throttle.

Work cars? Hell yes! Nothing like a 4 wheel chirp going into second.

it sometimes chirps, but i do my best not to let it : |

Not alot but if you do it alot, then it will hurt the car. More likely the uni will go but diff and gearbox can go too.

Hi everyone,
My AU2 Fairlane used to chirp between 1 and 2 with the skift kit but I had it turned down because it was too much for every day. I really miss it whend riving enthusiastically. The chirp and jolt on the neck was very exciting when kicking down also and used to give all my passengers a fright, especially when coming out of a corner. Seeing those big old modified Statesmans do it makes me very jealous. But one day after having it turned down I managed to do it again when manually shifting from 1 to 2, probably because I was just on redlining. Never tried that again. But I think that auto's without a shift kit just sound plain lazy to me now. I have a question: I was doing full throttle from a stop in the wet a few weeks ago and the car gave a little wiggle from gears 1 to 2. Would it do that without a shift kit as well? Andrew.

yeh mine does, especially now that the rear tyres are about 50% and smooth as ... makes for some 'interesting' experiences if the steering wheel is turned even about 2degs off centre.. nothing like oppy locking it when not even meaning too..

Mine will chirp worse if you let it change to second at between 3k and 4k than if you nail it all the way to 5k and change it then. (c4 with kit and more stall)

When I'm pushing my car it sometimes, well more than sometimes go beyond the chirp and end in wheelspin. My manualised trans shifts damn hard. 1st time I drove it, it sounded as if the **** end was going to fall out on a shift.
I've managed to chirp 10.5" slicks on the strip. I only have 2 gears low and high or 1st and "D" depends on the way you look at it. Answer = no, I don't do it intentionally or to impress anyone.

To answer your question, you probably had a minor lock up of the rear wheels, the trans noticed it and dropped a gear causing the minor lock to be a little more agressive and kicking out the rear. I used to do it deliberately in the LTD when it was an auto..

I know about the shift kits that you wire in, and you can even adjust the harshness with a dial. I was advised to avoid these things and go for a direct adjustment in the auto box, (which included a free auto trans oil change that I need at the time!). I was told that the electronic mod would lead to more problems in the end.
