Farley: Ford has not “given up” on development of ICE Engines

In spite of the massive US Government Push for EVs, Ford has announced a commitment to continue developing Internal Combustion Engines, and is splitting the company into two key Divisions - and relabeling its legacy internal combustion engine division to "Ford Blu", and Ford "Model e business unit" for EVs.

The Ford Blu Division will be run by "a dedicated team to run that business with passion".

“We still think that more than half of our customers are going to be (opting for) ICE (powered vehicles), and they’re going to be for a long time. It’s almost like our industry has kind of given up on that business......

“Even if the unit volume starts to fall over when mass adoption of electrification happens, in a lot of segments, that’s not going to happen, and we want to have a dedicated team to run that business with passion,” he told Automotive News. "

Yes, the US$30 Billion EV R&D & Production Cost is not viable or self-sustainable in the short to mid term (or longer), and needs to be Financially Supported by traditional ICE Car Sales. This is probably no different to most other manufacturers, who may need to divest themselves of the Green ideological blinkers, and scrutinise their Real-World Balance Sheets when fully committed to EVs.

The point is they are committed to continue to Develop ICE Engines, not just sitting on existing development & technology.

Hopefully this will include the Coyote 5.0 V8, which has just been hit with a 10hp reduction resulting from Biden's new "Greening America" Emissions restrictions.

In reality it will be the market that decides how popular EV's will become, not the manufacturers or governments.

The crossover point where EV's outsell ICE's is a lot further away than the greenies would have you believe. It certainly won't be this decade.

Ford will be one of the car makers that will be the turning point from ICE to EV (whatever). When they release enough models to move BEVs from a niche car to a common vehicle (availability, price, etc.) that will turn the tide. We have had a good preview of that with the F150 lightning and Mustang Mach E.
