A lot depends on the impact to the driver side.
Wondering, if there were any passengers, would they have survived?

A couple of years back, in Melbourne, on Warrigal Rd, a Hyundai i30, ran a red light, t-boned a Falcon, killing three passengers, the damage looked a lot less horrifc than the above pic.

ABC version stated 'high performance car' and ID'd it as a XR6 T. Where's Evan Green?

That's really bad... I wonder what he hit? a tree perhaps?

Should cars really split like that too? Shouldn't modern engineering of cars prevent this from happening? Questions...questions..

Was very common in the older Commodores, must've been a fairly hard hit I'd say.

By the look of it the emergency services would have used there "jaws of life" to cut away the doors, B pillar and sill to gain access to the driver. I have seen pictures of a couple of accidents in the last couple weeks where the cars have split in two on impact, one with a bus and the other one with a car. In both cases the driver walked away.

We have had two similar accidents like that in the Barossa Valley in the last 10 years. The first I remember well as it was a few km's up the road from my parents house at 1am one night. Two males in a VR senator copy/rip off hit a tree at approximately 180km/h split the car into 3 pieces. Driver was killed instantly and the passenger was found walking the road drunk and disorientated with only minor cuts and bruises. It's somewhat unbelievable that he survived. Second was a 07 WRX where it's believed the guy committed suicide. The car hit tree with the drivers door at in excess off 200km/h. It total disintegrated the tree trunk which was 300 to 400mm in diameter (usually the tree fairs pretty well) The back of the car was found in a river bed 60meters from the crash site and the front of the car 150meters up the road.

Cheers Ryan

If you build them like a 70 ton tank , no should not split in half when involved in a huge impact, people neglect to realise most car body's are only made of folded sheet metal, if you hit it hard enough , it will bend/crush, tear/break.

The driver is actually in hospital in a critical condition with family by his side.

Broken pelvis and several ribs but internal bleeding is the major problem.

He was thrown out and there was no cutting required etc. It was torn apart by impact.

Hit a huge tree sideways at RHS rear door and evidence seems to indicate he was drag racing and lost it, mounted a curb and slid on the grass and dirt into the tree at high speed. Rear of the car was torn off and it carried on for metres down the road

In some aspects theyre also only built to look good in the official crash tests. I frequently tell friends theres no official read crash test, not that fhis example looks like a rear impact

The local media had trawled his Facebook and found clips of him going hard in it in an industrial area. There was a Skyline parked up at the scene when it happened, racing??? I wonder.
