Since the mid 1990s all taxis in Victoria were painted yellow. In recent times I've noticed taxis in other colours. Has the rule been changed?

Change made in 2013 as part of the (another) industry review.
Melbourne's familiar yellow taxis will soon be changing colour in a bid to spark competition and improve industry standards. The move to introduce alternative colours to the current yellow taxi scheme has been approved by the Taxi Services Commission as part of an overhaul of the industry. The commissioner, Graeme Samuels, has announced smaller taxi networks will be allowed to paint their cabs different colours as part of attempts to stimulate competition in the industry. It is part of a raft of industry changes that also include more stringent driver testing and changes to the licensing system. "You might see cabs that are, I don't know, lime green or blue," he said. "What you'll be able to do is go to a taxi rank and say I want to pick a particular colour because I understand they provide a much better quality service, they've got better quality drivers. "That's what competition is all about giving customers a choice."

I was going to say this. They changed ages ago. Some companies have decided to keep the yellow.

very few are other colours
only specific service providers have changed i.e. siltertop silver service, aimed at the business market only allows luxo barge cars most are holden caprice and surprisingly they are silver in colour. there is also one small timecompany which has bright red, forgotten what they are called and what they specialise in. from the taxi services commission under Vehicle branding, towards the bottom of page http://www.taxi.vic.gov.au/owners-an...oking-services 'While metropolitan taxis are generally required to be painted in Victorian Taxi Yellow, operators representing a group of five or more taxis may apply to the TSC for an exemption to this requirement, on the grounds that the group of taxis provides a distinct service.' i'l leave it at that will start ranting about the govco handling over taxis. |

Disappointing as the yellow taxis became symbolic of Melbourne. Would have preferred another colour so as to not be a copy of US taxis. Example; Gemany has cream coloured taxis.

AFAIK, the green roof taxis were only for use during peak demand times, like Thursday and Friday nights, special events and obviously on weekends.

Some taxi's I have seen have obviously very cheap yellow paint as the colour looks faded and old.
Am starting to see more and more silvertop taxi's around too. |
