Default Is this guy serious? $4k for a '88 Laser??

I think this guy must be on something. Not only does he want $4,000 for a 27-year-old Laser that's probably worth only a few hundred bucks:

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...D-152299/?Cr=8

But the guy claims to have spent $4600 on fixing it - including a new $2000 paint job! Even if by some miracle he does manage to get 4 grand for it, he's still down $600 compared to if he had just taken the car to the wreckers!!!

A car is worth as much as someone is prepared to spend.

Some people do spend too much. Some teenage girl will probably talk her daddy into buying it.

Looks like it could be one of FASTFORD's cars!

It's probably the lowest klm Laser in Australia and can do 0-100 in 5 secs

Whatever price you put on a car when you try to sell it, someone will always try to get it cheaper, that's how the game is played. If you start withh too low a price you shoot yourself in the foot.

It 'looks' clean in the photos (needs more though) so someome might think, "That looks clean, I'll go and have a look." Once the head is there, negotiations can begin.

agreed

but surely those prices are 'this blokes just asking far too much no point looking he won't come down enough for me to even try'

A teenage girl would likely have no idea what a Laser even is. Why would a teenager be interested in this car when there are about 1 million better cars out there for the same money, or less?

Sadly, yes. $17,000 for a Ghia in 1988. That means the price he's asking is nearly 25% of the original value. Cars were ridiculously overpriced in the 80s, especially small cars.

Just checked it out on Redbook, the car new was $17,810. Using the RBA inflation calculator it would be $37,954.71 today. You're not joking about cars being overpriced in the 80s.

Oh God, the stickers. I had forgotten how ugly Lasers were, they always looked cheap compared to the Mazda 323 co-car. You still see the odd Laser around. Maybe some of them were very reliable. It's...the combination of the stickers, the silver colour.

$4000? To be totally honest (this sounds stupid) but if it's been a stupidly reliable car...

Forget it. It's a silver Laser covered in stickers. It gets you into Sexpo. I think I'll go and lie down now.

I've seen that car on Carsales for a long time. It's probably been re-advertised recently. The seller would probably have more success if he sold it for $1000ono and removed all the stickers. It appears to otherwise be a very tidy KE Laser Ghia.

Don't knock Lasers. They are great cars, and that KE series is quite pretty. And I'd argue that the Laser was far better looking than the Mazda 323.

I remember a small comic I saw way back then of a confused customer in a caryard. The salesman is saying "Well yeah, if you want economy, you have to pay for it"
