Default NSW registration renewal missed and car is in VIC

Hi all,
I'm in Vic but have a query re NSW registration. my soon to be daughter in law has borrowed her dad's car that was registered in NSW (under pensioner discount) and did not realize that the reg expired on 31 Aug 14. Her parents also didn't realize. Now I know cars in NSW need yearly inspections to get reg renewal but how do we do it now for this car that is in Vic presently?
I assume it needs to be driven to NSW to be checked & I know there is a 3 month grace period before the reg is actually cancelled like there is in Vic.
My questions I suppose are:
1. can the car be checked in Vic and recognized by NSW Roads?
2. does the car need to be checked in NSW therefore needs to be driven back there?
3. if needs to be done in NSW, can it be driven considering the registration officially expired on 31 Aug 2014?
Aasuming the answer to 1 is no, and to 2 is yes and 3 is no, does that mean the car needs some sort of temporary registration to actually drive it from Vic to Wagga Wagga?
If anyone knows the answer appreciate your comments.
thanks

1 - No, but kind of.. Most mechanics in border towns are licenced to inspect for both states..
2 - Yes, at least to the border..
3 - No

If you can get to wodonga you should be able to get a nsw roadworthy done there.. You would still require a vic unregistered vehicle permit to drive it there though, if you have to cross the border you will also need a nsw unrego vehicle permit..

Technically you are legally allowed to drive it unregistered for the purpose of taking it to get inspected. Im not sure how that works if you are in a different state however.

But I would get an unreg vehicle permit for Vic and drive it to the nearest mechanic who can do NSW pink slips.

That's the way to go I would say. The temporary permits are pretty cheap for
a day and may be organised and paid for over the phone.

Just to clarify this a little.... Agreed, you must get the unregistered vehicle permit from the State the trip starts in (in this case Vic.) But that permit allows you to drive the vehicle interstate and covers you for the entire trip listed on the Permit. (ie: if you needed to drive from Vic. to say WA... you'd be covered in Vic, SA & WA).

I bought an unregistered NSW car in Vic. and brought it home to SA.... I contacted all 3 State rego departments and was told the same story. Permit needs to come from the State's authority the journey starts in... and covers the car in another State if it is listed on the permit as part of the trip from A - B. Had to put the permit in the windscreen... but did feel weird driving a car with no rego plates from Melb. to Adel. Got stopped half way home by the cops (car with no rego plates is an obvious target ).. showed him the permit.. no problems... kept going.

Hope this helps !?

Dhru

My daughter had one of my NSW registered cars in Victoria for over 4 years and the RTA accepted a Victorian roadworthy each year for renewal.
Having said that, that was when Vic roadworthy's were about $65.
A roadworthy now is closer to $170.
Just contact the RTA in NSW they may still accept interstate roadworthy's. Even at $170 it will still be cheaper that taking the car interstate and risking being caught for unreg.

thanks all, will give the NSW rego dept a call first to see if they will accept vic RWC. If not then the unreg permit seems to be the go especially if the one permit covers it all the way to wagga where her dad can get it up to scratch.
thanks again.

Nsw used to accept interstate inspections when rego was renewed by mail due to owner traveling. Not sure if they still do but worth checking on.
