Buyers of Ford hot-hatches could soon be able to amp up the power by way of a factory-backed performance upgrade.

The Fiesta ST and existing Focus ST may soon be available with a Mountune performance enhancing kit, which significantly ups the amount of power and pace from the blue oval models.

The upgrade for the Fiesta ST - the regular version of which launches here in September - sees its 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine churn out 158kW and 320Nm, a sizeable jump from its regular 132kW/290Nm outputs.

The power increases are courtesy of more freeflowing air intake and tweaks to the car’s ECU, which make it able to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds, 0.2s quicker than the standard model.

The Focus ST with the Mountune enhancement pack produces 202kW and 400Nm from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an 18kW and 40Nm boost over the standard car that brings its maximum torque figure into line with the manic Opel Astra OPC.

The pack includes a new alloy intercooler, air filter and alloy inlet duct, and cuts the Focus ST’s 0-100km/h sprint time from 7.0s to 5.95s.

"It’s something we’re looking at locally but at this stage it’s too early to put any timings on when it will be available," McDonald says.

"Clearly though it’s something that would appeal to some of our Ford performance hatch customers," he says.

In the past, Ford Australia has been reluctant to offer performance enhancement kits, even from affiliated go-fast brands, due to concerns over effects on the new car warranty.

It’s likely that any decision on the performance parts for Australian cars will be made sometime in 2014.

In Europe the upgrades are reasonably priced. The Fiesta kit is priced just under $1000, and the Focus kit is about $2000.

I have been in contact with MT for a month or so along with a couple of others asking about these upgrades.

Not sure how I got this in my head, but I thought that the Focus ST did 0-100 in the mid 6s?
Regardless I think it would be great to have actual factory backed performance options available. They even seem to be reasonably priced too (looking at you Walkinshaw...)

I was under the impression that Focus ST did 0-100 in 6.1 secs, and the Fiesta ST in 6.9 seconds.

I was under the impression that O/S these kits didn't void your warranty...anyone know if this will be the case in Oz? Can these kits be fitted after the fact?

They are factory warranted OS. It would have to be here aswell, that's been the biggest mountune selling point, might not be the highest HP gains but it factory. And maybe later on they will release the MR series aswell like the MKII ST.

Ford are too gutless when it comes to this stuff. There have been numerous upgrade kits they have rejected because of warranty concerns. Just grow a pair Ford, other manufacturers are doing it with no issues so have a crack.

They seem like good upgrades at a good price.

We're in Australia, triple the price. At least. It would be exciting if ford got onboard with some performance stuff that is covered under warranty. They had the right idea with the motorshow version of the GT Black.

Those torque figures suggest that all these upgrades basically do is allow the Ecoboost's overboost function to be permantly available.

Dont get the turbo in OZ, and id love to see that stay near the bumper of even a standard ST. Let alone a MT powered ST.

Mountune approached Ford AUS on release of the WS Fiesta in 2009 about their factory backed performance mods approved by Ford Europe and covered by factory warranty.

Ford Australia told them to GTFO.

It was air intake, extractors, exhaust and a tune, brought 0-100 down to mid 7 seconds from 9.3.

So good luck I doubt they will allow it.

The idea of being able to have a moderate play without throwing your full drivetrain warranty in the bin is very appealing.
