Yep..."Landau", "Cabriolet", "Sedan", "coupe"...they all date back way before the automobile...not to mention all the car parts that are hold-overs from the car days..."dashboard", "floorpan", not to mention some motoring journalists still referring to the steerring wheel as a "tiller" and probably thinking they are making a nautical reference to a boat, instead of the first cars all having "tiller steering"...

AH, the old Landau Reason that is in such good nic is because it was my 3rd mode of transport.

It was 4 HP ..... but had to eat 1 when times got bad. So 3 HP had to suffice before I could afford some gas. Lucky though, that came very naturally. I thought it was good enough to bottle but others thought otherwise.

It was good when they became horseless ......hated cleaning up the crap ..... well the Mrs did anyways.

Now a days I like to chug around, minding my own business with a gentle prod from the Mrs every few K's just to make sure I don't doze off.

Life is good ...... and has been for the past 90 odd years.

Needs to be lowered IMO

So why did Ford choose the name Landau?

I would have thought you would have known the answer to that Q cobber ?

My guess: Landau = fake convertible, Australias' answer to the Americans' Thunderbird coupe?

OTOH for a bit of trivia:

Fairlane, this name was taken from Henry Ford's estate, Fair Lane, situated near Dearborn Michigan

Now what is the deal with the Marquis??

I'm guessing that you were already well aware of where the Landau name came from, or have no interest in Australian history.
The above carriage is beleived to have been one of the earliest 'coaches' that was introduced into Aus that is still in existence. Dates back to 1820s.

Ford used the Landau name/theme well before our car, back in 64'ish, the Tbird came out with a Landau option and iirc, the actual name was given to a Ford (can't remember the model) in South America in the late 60's.

Marquis was also used on mercurys from the 60's but I'm not sure how the name came about in Ford, presumably it has something to do with its French meaning?

Just on Fair lane, it goes even further back than Henry's house, he named it after the area in Ireland where some of his family came from.

Fair Lane was indeed the Ford estate in Dearborn, built in 1914 at a cost of $1m and named after the area in Cork where Henry'y grandfather came from.

Marquis comes from Samuel Marquis who was the minister of Henry's local church, and worked for Ford (head of the Socialogical department) and became very close to Henry until he was not re-hired after a restructure in 1921 (along with 20,000 other employees).

Get a copy of "Ford, The Men and the Machine" by Robert Lacey. Great read about Ford from very early years until the 80's, very very interesting, all 750 pages!

Info from the Cobb&Co Museum:

The royal wedding featured five magnificent carriages from the Royal Family’s collection of vehicles. The vehicles were landaus - carriages which seat four passengers and have folding hoods.

Cobb+Co Museum Director Deborah Tranter said the Semi-State Landau, which carried Prince Charles the Prince of Wales and Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall, as well as Kate’s parents Carol and Ron Middleton, was the same carriage used by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York when they opened Australia’s first Federal Parliament in Melbourne in May 1901.

“The landau was built by Peters and Sons of London which built several carriages in the Royal Mews, including the Glass Coach that will be used by Prince William and Kate Middleton in the event of rain on the wedding day,” Mrs Tranter said.

Those of us who were not able to travel to London to see the carriages featured in the wedding procession can see an example of a fine English Landau at Cobb+Co Museum in Toowoomba.

Ms Tranter explained that the Museum’s carriage also has a royal connection having carried Princess Alexandra on her tours to Queensland in 1959 and 1964.

The name landau is believed to have come from the town in Bavaria where this style of carriage originated in the 17th Century.

The English Landau is on permanent display in Cobb+Co Museum’s National Carriage Gallery.

http://www.cobbandco.qm.qld.gov.au/A...ing+Procession

So all of the Royals love a Landau
