Default Bf XR6 Turbo or XR8

Hi guys

I'm stuck at the moment I just sold my ba fairmont Ghia a couple of weeks ago but I'm having trouble in deciding what to get a T6 or a V8 i like both thats the problem I've herd that the xr6 is cheaper to mod and run but I do like the sound of a good V8 and the bonnet hump
Just wondering what's everyone's thoughts with would be the better one I'm kinda leaning towards the 8 but I've herd there not the best engines is there any common problem about the two and is it true that you need to take the engine out of the V8 just to do the exhaust any help would be great cheers

Ive had both, but i love my boss V8 so much.
Doubt ill get another turbo 6 again unless i wanna loose my licence.

For me, id go the 6T.

Better fuel economy, the 6T was cheaper brand new, so hopefully would be a bit cheaper then the 8 now as well.

6T is virtually as powerful as the 8, and a few quick easy mods will get you there, and its a tiny bit lighter

Plus i only like old school V8's.

That's my 2cents anyway.

I've had both...

Xr6t is ferocious with a few mods (cooler, actuator, injectors, pump, valve springs and tune) but lacks street presence. Stock they are nothin special.

Xr8 was just as much fun, diff gears, cams, full exhaust and tune. plus it oozes character, rumbling v8 and the bulge.

I have the best of both worlds...a boosted xr8!!

I sold the xr6t to go xr8 but neither is better or worse. I'd be happy with both.

As the cars are used I'd say buy the lowest km best condition of either that you can afford. If you put up a xr8 or xr6t I'd take the car in better condition.

just my opinion, i would say the 6t is probably better economic wise, it is easier to work on, cheaper to run, especially if things go wrong,
the v8 is a bigger engine with more moving parts so extra labor for repairs.

I chose the BF xr6t - i prefer a sleeper, doesn't attract the police or holden bogan element, much much faster than the xr8, uses less fuel, easier to modify, and better bang for your buck when modifying, and has preoven to be very reliable. Mine has 182,000km now and has been used well beyond what most would consider doing, and is still running beautifully.

Yeh I agree with GTP Owner. Go the turbo. I just recently sold BF Typhoon & it was a great car, style, power & if I had the dollars & space I would have kept it

Unless you absolutely need to have the V8 sound, then the BF XR6T is an easy winner on every level.

I think the best advice was from RAPID_BA, look at both in your search, then you can have more choice in colour, auto/man, condition etc, and pick the one that screams your name

The XR8s are great cars and can sound very nice, but i personally think they are very sluggish and take a lot to get moving. Mind you this is only from driving 2 different B series XR8s that were both pretty stock apart from exhausts so I'm not sure how they go when tuned.
The BF XR6Ts and F6s fly in stock form and after a few mods they become almost scary. I personally don't think you can beat the feeling of boost especially when it comes from a great looking car like a falcon!

Questions

Street, track or strip, are you going to tow, are you going to modify, auto or manual.

STOCK

If its street only what do you want, do you want a V8 grumble or a quiet achiever, are you happy to pay more at the pump for the grumble.

Track, power to weight rules.

Strip, power to weight rules.

MODIFIED

Street, T6 can make big power gains for a minimal outlay whereas to get the NA V8 making the same power it will cost you double (if even achievable).

Track, power to weight rules.

Strip, power to weight rules.

This is HORSEPOWER/TORQUE only as Im assuming that brake, suspension and weight modifications/upgrades would be typical for each.

Also the lighter the car the less tyre/brake wear you will see.

Specs from Carsales (taken with a grain of salt)

BF Mk2 XR6T
Fuel claimed 12.3 ltrs/100 klm
Power claimed 245KW @ 5250 rpm
Kerb weight claimed 1772 Kg
Power to weight ratio = 0.1382618Kw per Kg

BF Mk2 XR8
Fuel claimed 13.7 ltrs/100klm
Power claimed 260KW @ 5250 rpm
Kerb weight claimed 1810 Kg
Power to weight ratio = 0.1436464Kw per Kg

So the standard NA V8 has a better power to weight ratio of 0.0053842 Kw per Kg over the standard T6.

Then its up to where the power is made in the rev range and lots of other various dibs and dabs.

Damn, now Im confused.....

Me, I like the sound of a V8 but the power delivery of a turbo.

Strangley though I now drive a NA 6, its cheap, gets me to work and keeps my head dry when its raining.

My philosophy now is standardish for the street and modified for racing.

It's mainly for the street and I'm going to get a 6 speed M...I'm not planing to do any towing anytime soon

I've got an 8 and love it to bits. I've never driven an xr6t. However I have driven a bf f6. My god. The way it delivered the power was unbelievable. Think it had been modified though because under full throttle it seemed to surge a bit and I'm thinking it was the fuel pump. Hope it wasn't traction control since I was doing about 170+. I loved that car and if I had the coin I would have traded the 8 there and then.

^^^ this is exactly what happened to my mate. He always had some sort of V8 (still has a BA xr8) and once he took my xr6t for a drive he went a bought a bf f6 ute. They are 2 completely different experiences. Making the hard choice of which one would suit YOU better seems to be the difficult task though

Yeah I know I drove a Ba xr8 mark 2 in a 6 speed the other day and it was a nice car sounded great but the extra weight doesn't do it any good I'm yet to drive a Manuel turbo I've only driven the old 4 speed auto in the turbo so I'm hoping the Manuel goes better

I've got both. The turbo is fast, but the V8 makes me smile every time.

I drive a BF Mk1 XR8 and it is just awesome.

I've driven a mates 500hp F6 ute and it was very fast but the noise it made was not inspiring at all.

The BOSS (with a proper aftermarket exhaust) sounds great at any speed. Spend a few grand on mods and you'll have yourself a 430hp V8 that will hold it's own against a G6E Turbo... with the aircon running! (personal experience on a track)

Let me tell you, hearing that BOSS motor hit 6200rpm in the dead of night is something to be experienced my friend... you'll start to understand why some of us V8 guys can get a little too attached to our cars.

Some guys just want to go fast and look cool, I like to get around to the sound of V8 music.

Each to their own, try them both and see what you like...just keep in mind the XR8 is a monster waiting to be unleashed in stock form.

I like the turbo. Drove a V8 but decided to get an F6.

It probably doesn't matter to me about exhaust note as I cant hear it over the spool noise, fuel pump, intake noise and wheel-spin.

Diff ratio change will liven up the car also.

How much did that all the mods set you back i guess it wouldn't of been cheap doing cams on a quad cam V8
