why would you start it, touch anything electrical when you know there is gas in it? id have waited for it to disperse before going near it!

Why would you store an acetylene bottle in a fully enclosed vehicle?
He's extremely lucky to be alive after what can only be described as a pretty moronic series of events. Surely when he smelt the gas it would be as simple as turn the bottle off open a couple of doors and walk away while it disperses? Last edited by g220ba; 09-12-2011 at 12:19 PM. |

FAEs are the most powerful weapons short of nuclear.
Any fuel gas should be treated with caution but some are just downright dangerous. |

I'd probably just about call the fire brigade to get the area closed off as a precaution until the gas dispersed.

A friend of the family, back in the early 80's, went out to his panel van in the morning to go to work (Plumber), turned the key and Bang!, it took him 3 days to die of his injuries....

Might have had minimal injury due to being sheilded from the explosion by the seat he was sitting in ?

Look at the dash and steering wheel area. If he was sitting there, he would have been shrapnel. Im not doubting the car blowing up - but I 100% doubt he was in the car at the time. |

# 2 the truck/4x4 would be filled with so much black stuff ( fibre type stuff after acetylene is burned )that it wouldn't be funny # 3 who here has done an acetylene bomb they are buggers I remember wrapping a tennis ball in masking tape then pealing it off and making a tennis ball size carrier for the acetylene then filling it up till the ball could not hold any more gas ..... those things made the windows rattle 20 mtrs away If that was a cylinder worth they would be burying the guy and he wouldnt be here to talk about it sorry but bs big time

It was an explosion of some sort, metal is bent in the right ways. Don't think it's fake, unsure if it was aceytlene though. Notice the rear door still in the locked position and the metal is peeled/buckled outwards.
But common sense says "you can smell it, open door and walk away for 10 minutes". I think aceytelene is heavier than air, so gotta becareful around any water heaters too. We had an unexplainable event happened at work. But we think we know what happened. We had pits in our workshop, that collated all the mud/grease/oils and water over the years. We clean the floors quite regularly with a scrubber. Possibly a solution that was used, had some sort of vapours. Well when the scrubber cleaned the floors, the waste was dumped down one of the grates (the waste was collected in a proper manner of an EPA design). Somehow, someone was welding over the pit, sparks went down the drain and caught some of the vapours, then ignited and from 2 workshop bays away, shot a grate up in the air about 4 metres. This grate weighed about 90kgs. You do the math, thats so serious pressure there. Could of killed someone or multiple injuries, due to the weight of the grate. Resultant was the pits were sealed with concrete and problem was never to happen again. Even scary stuff happens when you don't expect it. |

I think some of you a being a little harsh here. Everything is easy in hindsight.
I'm sure there has been lots of times when people have smelt something and thought nothing of it and then continued on their merry way. I've carried and continue to carry oxy/acetylene in my vehicle. It used to be in a van, now I have a Falcon ute (with canopy) and if it by chance leaks there is no way I'd smell it. But I also double check that everything is closed whenever I use it.
