Default The Death of QANTAS

QANTAS just anounced that as of immediately they are grounding all International & Domestic domestic flights that are not currently in the air.

QANTAS Link and Jetstar will continue operations.

Well shareholders were unanimous in giving the CEO Alan Joyce a doubling of his pay, up to around 5 million dollars. All whilst telling "bottom end" employees where to stick their pay request.

And the best QANTAS customers can do is complain about their flights being interrupted. And no, I wouldnt complain about it as a customer.

Sure, but all these workers have done now is to throw away their jobs. If QANTAS isnt flying, these people don't have jobs.

They should have thought about that.

It is interesting though. Whilst its pure speculation to suggest they wouldve lost their jobs eventually anyway, courtesy of cost cutting measures. I think we can safely assume it will happen. If Qantas grounds flights, its only money lost to them.

Burn alan joyce.... another CEO who pillages a company votes themselves a $2MILLION payrise and then destroys a company.

Over $5mill per annum..... yes lets all rally behind the CEO.

Joyce wont be mucked with and lock outs puts bargaining pressure back on the TWU.

Well, the baggage handlers (TWU) wouldn't have lost their jobs, not unless QANTUS stopped operating at their airports completely anyway.

It's a lockout, I can't see any mention of people losing their jobs just yet, has that been announced elsewhere? If the workers felt that they were being treated fairly, they wouldn't be striking. Surely QANTAS won't just close the doors over this, it doesn't make any sense at all. It's a battle of wills at this point.

That's what I would assume. QANTAS is pushing back the only way they can, lock the workers out and starve them into agreement. Be interesting to see how it pans out.

funny how many of you are making anti-union comments. how many of you actually know what their claims are actually about?? qantas are experts at putting out only the info that suits them and their "hearts & minds" campaign to bust the union.

contrary to popular (conservatitve) belief, the unionists involved are NOT about greed and bully boy tactics. the only bullying tactics being used at the moment are by qantas management. anyone who travels qantas on a regular basis should be concerened about the direction qantas management are taking the company.

AJ.. He came from Ryan Air to Jetstar under Dickson, who in my opinion was the real destroyer of QANTAS.. He got a 10m kiss goodbye also, but it was Dickson who first started breaking QANTAS up, getting it ready for sale.

Guess now, if not resolved straight away, they will fold the company, sell off to the Multi National waiting in the wings, then re-employ at lower rates and have worse conditions.

I'm not taking sides because I don't know who is right and wrong here, but you would think in this day and age people could sit down and work it out..

I'm flying with Qantas in December to visit my mum for her 60th birthday way up North. I hope they get this resolved soon.

amazing really . goes to show how much money directors can burn into thin air , just to prove a point , and yet double their own salary whilst doing it . you'ld think it would be cheaper just to give pay rises to all , and have a local job security agreement . double standards plus .
just sayin .
economically it makes no sense .
it kind've just shows look what we can do with money that you cant !!!

or to put it another way . your not get a pay rise , but watch us ignite this $20 000 000 per day before your eyes , ahaaahaaaaaaaa haaaaaahhhhh !

I don't have any info on what they are actually fighting for, but you could bet job security is more of an issue than pay rises, though everyone who hears about strikes automatically assumes it's over money.

Thanks you...

Im appalled at some of the sentiments displayed here.
Since when does the average aussie give their support to the CEO of a company who just voted himself a $2MILL payrise just 2 days ago?

Why is it when a strike occurs, people whinge about those nasty unions?

Funny how several threads ran on here about delays and aircraft breaking down constantly. Some posters made comments about Qantas out sourcing maintenance.... seemingly supportive.

Now we have the workers... ALL the Qantas workers in revolt. But hey they dont deserve a pay rise or job sercurity.... but lets not say anything about Alan Joyce voting himself a payrise and continuing to draw a massive pay with no doubt a massive bonus when he leaves after he has destroyed Qantas and sold the remnants of Australias LAST icon to overseas interests.

Continuing to threaten action causing the grounding of flights, and then
canceling actions so members can still get paid while QANTAS could not
reinstate planes is driving customers away in droves.

The union is killing QANTAS.

The whole of the Australian traveling public is now very anti union,
these stupid people threatened to slow cook QANTAS, you can't do that...
