Well we all know how the adds go... "Every K is a killer"
But not when the government sanctions speeding on public roads it seems. How does this grab you as the ultimate finger at the average motorist? In beautiful downtown Townsville several public roads are closed off to the average motorist because of the upcoming V8 supercars. Now I got to read the terms of conditions for those who wanted to show their car at the car show and do a lap of the track on Sunday. One of the terms stated that despite the roads being closed and that it was a "race" track, all the road rules apply so NO SPEEDING was allowed. (As you arent a "race" driver). All very well and good.... except parts of the race track arent gazetted roads and have no posted signage with speed limits or centreline markings. (only the main straight is actually a real public road) But today was a different day, under Police escort (3 red highway patrol cars) a large number of V8 race utes were driven (unregistered) around Townsville. Oddly enough, under Police escort, these cars were allowed to speed well in excess of the speed limit on one particular section of road (posted 70kmh) as they were overtaking a lot of cars. Yay for hypocrisy......

it is a family fun race event, with speeding performed by cams licenced drive in roll cage equipped race cars, if you want to speed get your cams licence and by a cheap race car and take it to the track.

We know a few cops between us. Let's get our own escorts happening. Were the cops speeding too? Pretty sure you can do it if they are. Or maybe they were stolen and being chased? Lol |

some of you seem to miss the point at how we are told this and that by the add campain, but its all good as long as your promoting something? Funny how whenever someone on here has a whinge he was caught speeding we all tell him off that he shouldnt break the law blah blah....

Ok ill give you a hypothetical... your in a car show cruise under police escort.. you do a massive burnout. Do you think the cops will turn a blind eye? I have been in a couple of organised car show cruises, while some of the cars were not registered everyone still had to comply with the road rules etc... no speeding, no burnouts. So why are these guys given special treatment on open public roads mixed with peak hour traffic? Again this isnt about me... its about the public perception of car enthusiasts "hoons" etc... and about a level playing field. I dont care about their skill level as some have said. Remember a "famous" F1 driver who was fined for doing a burnout?

would you have done it or declined - whether coppers turn a blind eye or not if i drop a wheelspin at a show is irrelevant
the question is relevant, simply because it seemed i missed a point, have you not missed mine |

I said earlier that the terms and conditions of people doing the lap on sunday for the car show cruize are not allowed to speed and were to maintain the speed limit and no breaking of road rules while on a closed track....
I am talking about hypocrisy by the state in its add campain about every K is a killer... and the fact that car owners in a cruise on a CLOSED circuit MUST NOT BREAK THE LAW... while race cars driven on an open public road were allowed to speed under Police escort. Again this isnt about me...

since you will not say that you would not have taken part - it could be safe to assume that you would have. if that is the case, isn't there a double standard to complain about it, if you would have taken part. and isn't it therefore hypocrytical to complain about the double standards in your first post, if you have similar double standards yourself
it doesn't matter who anything is about - double standards are double standards |

Or maybe you cant come up with a decent form of argument against what I have said you decide to attack the messenger? Which seems quite common here when people cant argue/ discuss something.
I drive over the limit every day and take that risk of getting a fine... that is the law. Again... why the difference between the cruise on a closed circuit and race cars on an open road?

there are alot of these threads coming up - too many people have too much time on their hands and therefore have to spend it complaining about everything
is there any proof they were speeding - and even if so, anyone else who would have done it, has no right to complain. obviously the general public can have double standards, but not the authorities |

We are NOT allowed to speed - you get caught. The public at the car show hosted on a RACE track, have been told they must still obey the normal road based speed limit, despite it being a race track. But unregistered (and largely unregisterable, probably) race utes have been allowed on public roads, and were speeding (under police escort). If every K over is a killer, why are the ute drivers still alive? Who though allowing them to flaunt the speed limit is a smart thing to do? What sort of message is ALLOWING these cars, unregistered, to speed on public roads sending to all the young guys in cars in FNQ? The message this is sending is "Every k is a killer, unless you are under police escort, or in an unregistered V8".

Sounds pretty stupid that the roads were closed off to make a racetrack where you had to obey the law on.
If I had a police escort on public roads and the cops were speeding, I would do it as well. |

I don't think you guys are getting the point OP is making. To me it is quite "clear", I don't yet understand why we are making a big deal out of him being "jealous" or whatever. His point is completely valid.
He isn't talking about the actual race right now. It wasn't the race day that he was referring to. What the OP is referring to is that these V8 supercars were DRIVIGN AROUND TOWNSVILLE, Townsville being some suburb where the AVERAGE PERSON is also driving on the road. These guys are speeding around, for no apparent reason. Now I won't go into saying yes or not in regards to if they were actually speeding - but if you guys cannot see the hypocrisy then we are ****** as a nation. The police do WHATEVER they can to **** us over as soon as we speed, no matter what. But then these guys with "training" come along and speed on the road while others are using it? Excuse me, training or not. Roll bars or not. You should NOT be speeding when there are "UNTRAINED" or "AVERAGE" people driving on the road with you. Sure, the racecar drivers might be better than average drivers. But what about Joe Blow just driving around town, should he have to deal with these guys speeding? Point being: the police say speeding is dangerous. Then why are they speeding with everyday drivers on the road? Personally, I don't give two hoots for this topic - I just felt compelled to chime in when I saw people giving OP flack because they couldn't look past the person attacks at him. Wish I could get a special "I'm trained" license that allows me to speed while people from the public are still on the road. |

And what liability do the race cars have when speeding on open public roads? Do I have evidence they were speeding? OMG NO I DONT.... Sorry but my speed camera was being calibrated. But again keep attacking the person and forget the message. The cars were speeding.... the posted limit was 70kmh. A great deal of Townsville drivers speed along this road, mostly doing 80kmh. ALL of the Police cars and the V8 utes were overtaking EVERY SINGLE CAR. The cars on that road were not going slow, they were at the very least doing 70kmh. I was standing in a car park and watch the convoy come past. Most of the utes were at wide open throttle and i would estimate 100kmh in the 70 zone as they were all trying to catch up to the lead Police car. But just keep attacking the messenger...

its a bit pot and kettle stuff. also, who judged that the cars were speeding? the OP says they were obviously speeding due to them 'passing a lot of cars'. could it not be possible that the cars being passed were driving well under the limit? you can't have your cake and eat it too. don't whinge about the speeding laws, and then in the next breath, whinge about people breaking the speeding laws. |
