Default AU intercooler

Is it a good idea to fit a inter cooler on a tickford 6 cyl and is it going to gain any performance.

It would work though, but keep in mind, that you need a roughly 10 degree intake temp drop to achieve 1rwkw more power. So an a bang for buck basis, get a set of extractors instead. ($600 odd should net 10rwkw, whereas $600 on an intercooler would net less than 3rwkw)

But wouldn't the standard cold air intake do the same thing as an intercooler? (which only cools the exhaust heated turbo air)

Yes, but not to the same extent.

In a turbo application, that's what it does, but there's nothing stopping someone from having pipework going from filter, to intercooler, then to TB. In theory, it should cool the incoming air a little, but in reality, probably not. Which is why you don't see too many NA cars with intercoolers.

Unless the cooler has ice in it it wont cool the air any more than ambient temp. If it was water cooled the air would probably be hotter than ambient all the time.

Sticking the filter somewhere cold will work the same and not have a massive restriction in front of it.
