There was media speculation last year about the low-end Commodores for the next generation being based on the FWD GM Epsilon II platform and performance/luxury models being on an evolved Zeta platform.

Personally I can't see it happening. Holden and Ford seem to enjoy producing rear wheel drive cars for the general Aussie market.

GMHolden want RWD Commodores. GM is talking FWD.
FordAus want RWD Falcons. FoMoCo is talking FWD/AWD. Only, that you hear about FWD Ford many more times. Purely bias from the media. It's acceptable to put the boot into the company who has made vehicles in Australia for 85years, but not to do so to GMHolden who've been doing it 25 years less. There has been nearly as much signalling about FWD Commodore by US figures, but it all gets neatly overlooked. I personally don't want either to go FWD. I also think Falcon will become the basis of a combined Mustang/Falcon.

Ideally you want the motor near the drive wheel, and the power source very close by. You could fit all this in the front, and have a drive shaft to the back wheels, but its not an ideal situation for a large electric car. Actually large and electric probably dont go together at all anyhow. The only way to even have a chance of making an electric commodore remotely viable (and i doubt its even possible) would be to make it front wheel drive. |

Just look at the Mitsubishi 380.
FWD in a Falcon or Commodore will not work, so if they do it it will be a suicide mission.

And with the plant being geared up for front wheel drive (must be the new four cylinder Commodore front wheel drive) lets hope GM, oops i mean Holden can keep building more cars for another 98 years.

Holden have 2 different production lines. One for the Commodore, one for the Cruze???. So I can't see them gearing up for a FWD Commodore based on that, otherwise they wouldn't have put in another production line. Waste of time, money and effort.

Exactly, i reckon its for the front wheel drive Commodore. The public will love it.

I think you've misinterperated what I wrote. Holden just put in a 2nd production line. One production line is for the Commodore, the 2nd one is for the Cruze, I think. (A smaller car either way) If they were going to produce a FWD Commodore, I seriously doubt they would have put that 2nd production line in for the smaller car. I reckon they would have just modified the Commodore line so it was a FWD. Personally I think all the hype is done by some Journo wanting something to spice the news up a bit. I also believe Holden just scored a contract with the US coppers to supply them with cop cars. Part of the reason they scored the contract is because the Commodore is a RWD. Most of the yanky stuff is FWD or AWD. (Don't hold me to this though)
