Cool QLD Personal plates

Hi does anyone know what the deal is when you buy or sell personal plates
I bought 2 sets of PP at a swap meet
I want to use one set on my car
and sell the other set on
I went to the transport office but couldnt get much sense
out of them other than it costs $78 to transfer them
do you have to have bought them from PPQ to
have them transfered to your name
as I got these from a swap meet no paperwork came with them
does any one know for sure where I stand
regarding official ownership of them
is it like buying a car without a receipt and then
just signing a stat dec
or something different
thanks

You will need to get the previous owner to sign paperwork to transfer them.. I just sold a set..

Dude, the only way to use them is to somehow find out the real owner, and have them sign transfer papers, all your currently own is a peice of tin, the old owner still owns the combination and could still be using it (via ordering replacement plates) on a vehicle of their own.

Then once you have the owner sign the form to transfer ownership to you then you pay the 78 bucks. then you can put them on your car.

Maybe the next step is to ring PPQ & explain the situation. Also, Please tell me you have a reciept from the seller saying that you have purchased said plates/combination. Otherwise your in a serious pickle. In fact, the receipt may not be enough. You would also need a witness, as well, such as your wife/brother/best mate/dog. Because it's your word vs his if he is pulling some something shifty.

This could get complicated.

PPQ wont release the details of the owners due to privacy laws, total waste of time.

The phrase "buyer beware " comes to mind...

No but he can explain the situation to PPQ, show the receipt, & have a witness confirm the sale at the swap meet. & ask them to get into contact with the owner, & also tell PPQ, that the plates are not stolen, they were sold.

But Fairlane, you should have been a more careful buying these, because who knows, this could be a combination that has been stolen to be sold on to an unsuspecting buyer. I would have been suspicious of them being sold at a swap meet without the transfer papers to be signed, & signatures of both parties or at least a way to contact the owner of the plates in case of a problem.

But anyone can give phony details, it's the lack of paperwork that has me guessing youve been caught out. This may be a police matter. If PPQ can't/won't help, take the plates to the police, explain the story, & hope for the best. that's all you can do.

On that note though, you may just get a talking to from the boys in blue about how you should go about buying at swapmeets & sent on your way....

Isn't there something like a REVS check that can be done??
Question...are they actually Queensland plates or just dodgy novelty plates?

Yes you could ask police if they are stolen.... at least then it would be safe to hang them up on the wall.

Depends if the plates have ever been on a registered car
The plates on my XC have never been on a regoed car
The plates wont be classed as stolen if it was never reported
You only need proof of ownership for replacment plates, like any other plate replacment

They are recorded against your name if not registered to a car, therefor they need the orginal owner to transfer them.....

That's great advice....not!

If it's anything like Victoria than you're screwed if you don't have some sort of Transfer of Rights form that both parties have signed.

Mate, if all else fails, perhaps you should post up the combo of the plates here, perhaps someone will recognise them and put you in touch with the registered owner??

lol...no, not unless you want to get done for fraud or something, with all the anti terrorist laws that came in a few years ago im pretty sure this sort of fraud has a harsh penalty..

like everyone has said the plates are just tin and are the property of the RTA/vic roads etc that's why you are suppose to hand them back if your car becomes unregistered, there is actually a fine for having plates in your possession if the cars registration has lapsed for more than 3 months.

The thing that you should have brought is the combination.

There is one other possibility perhaps that combo has lapsed as the plates were from a wrecked car so maybe check the roads website to see if that combo is available (RTA have that im not sure about other states).

If thats a no go and you did not pay much, i would just write this off to experience and a lesson learnt mate but if you did pay a good sum perhaps you could go to the police saying they sold it to you under false pretences or in the wrong manner so you wanted to contact them as its illegal to sell actual plates, you can only ever sell the right to the combination.

2 things could happen by doing this 1 you may find the guy who sold you the plates is the owner and is willing to sign the combo over properly.

Or you will find you have purchased some stolen plates.

Good luck buddy.

these are personalized plates... the combo belongs to a person/ company etc...
Even if attached to a unregistered car, the combo belongs to the person, not the car.

Cool

Thanks for all your comments
I went to QLD transport today
and they are actual QLD plates
and are not stolen
but without a receipt and transfer papers
from the original owner I cant use them
I cant even transfer them to my own name
they wont tell me whos name they are in
all I can do if I really want to keep them
is to start again and pay $400
thats telling me that the plates have lapsed
when you read between the lines
the lady at QLD transport wouldnt comment when I asked if
they are still currently on a registered car
I said can I hang them in the garage
she said yes thats all you can do with them
thanks for your input

Yes thats what I said.

In other words if the person who owns that combo does not pay the annual fee the plates/combo ownership lapse and become available for others to purchase at standard RTA prices ie: if you don't pay the annual fee you lose ownership rights to that combination which is what sounds like has happened so if you want to use the plates fairlane pay the $400.

If its a really great combination like a single number or GTHO or something best pay the $400 cause it could be worth thousands, check out the trading post/classifieds to see what i mean.

NSW - Annual Fee

QLD - Bought once, owned for life, unless transferred.

bigsta, it helps to do some research first. (No offence)
