Anyone read the Cars Guide's Top 10 worst cars they list the AU as
number 4. Ford AU Falcon: Ford spent $600 million to build it and immediately it failed as plain ugly. It also blew head gaskets, radiators and thermostats, yet there are still a lot of AU taxis limping around. Yes it was butt ugly, chewed a lot of money but head gasket issues hmm I think not from what I hear they are extremely hard to blow owing to failsafe technology and the heads are made from different material to the E series. The other thing he hasn't even mentioned is the transmission issues, front brake issues... You expect reviewers to be credible and have the correct facts I found this review most disappointing. http://www.carsguide.com.au/site/new..._10_worst_cars Cheers Chris |

Yeah the head gasket thing was an E series problem. AUs used the steel gasket which is heaps better.
Radiators are common place on both Falcons and Commodores of the last 10 years so not really an AU only thing. Looks, well we all know it was a love it or hate it car. I like the look of mine but I always get people coming up to me saying its a really ugly car. |

If he seriously thinks the AU was worse than the Camira, he's a nutter!
Half his argument is based on developmental costs and asthetics. That doesn't make a car a lemon. And as for head gaskets, isn't he thinking of E series? Shows his motoring credentials. GK

I owned my AU3 for about 3 or 4 years. Aside from a new steering rack and rear shock mounts, the car never came back from a service with any repairs required. The most reliable car I've owned with exception of my Mondeo. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Look who wrote it for a start.
The AU was IMO the most reliable car and probably still is. I had no major issues with either of my 2 AU's and as bucky said beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder

Yeah I have to agree. AU's are butt awful, I don't know how anyone could own one and show their face in public.

It looks like another ford beat up from carsguide which is standard practice every week in the cars guide pull out of fridays paper.
AU1 were'nt pretty I agree, series 2/3 still hold there own and mercedes even copied the AU look with the new S class,I think it is to a degree.

my brother has had a au2 forte since new. "he treats cars worse than a demolition derby driver who is taking a dive" and it is bullet proof. they are ugly until you lower them.

The AU was the most reliable and popular taxi during my career at Yellow Cabs from 1999-2006. I think that shows to the credibility of this model. The EF/EL series were close behind.
Having owned an AU1, AU2 & now AU3, I can personally vouch for them being a great solid car that keep going and going. You have to wonder how some of these folks get into the writing business. By the way, Steve has a good comment underneath.

The AU is the best falcon ford ever built. There is no denying that.

+1 Ford Service Manager for the EL/AU/BA series. AU had the least warranty issues of the three models, saw a number of unopened AU engines roll the clock and keep going, autos were good for 400k easy - when maintained they are simply bullet proof. Simply put, AU was built by the Engineering Dept, BAs were what happens when the Execs let the Marketing Dept have their way...... Cheers James |

You're quite right Jimmyd. The AU just had the sophistication in the right areas and the old tried & true tech in the other right areas. What ended up was the best falcon ever.
