Just for something to do, I removed the cold air intake from my Pipercross Viper and added an intake trumpet I had lying around the garage, turning it into a short ram intake.
It would be crap for heatsoak (so I'll change it back) but it looks hot (IMHO.....I'll probably do this for Small Ford Sunday) but the sound is AWESOME! See what you think

What I think you need is four more of them. But smaller. And on the end of your manifold.

That does look relly HOT!!! Has it improved the performance any??
If heat under the bonnet is too much maybe its worth investing in a evo style grill (or similar) to let the heat out?

And it'd be about as close as you'd get to the sound of the old kent bda engines. YouTube "bda escorts" kids and crank up the volume. On a slightly related note, have you thought about a twin tb? They (obviously) increase the volume of air it can pull in and you can still utilise the standard length runners. www.rpw.com.au make them for Mitsubishi engines only but they seem to have the idea licked pretty well. And from some of the photos the 'T' shaped layout looks perfect for an east-west engine layout. It all depends on how you can modify the manifold itself though. Would be easier if it was aluminium, you could then cut and shut it however you needed. Just thinking of alternatives.

I probably failed to mention that I've also installed a 65mm TB yesterday.
Frankly, I don't think you want to add more air than this and keep it driveable Going to the horsepower Factory Dyno Day later in the month, so will test the difference between trumpet and intake pipe, and also see if the throttle body has lifted power and torque

That trumpet looks mean. The noise coming from that would be just awesome.
I have to admit, as soon as I saw it, I was also thinking about your car with independent throttle bodies. The problem with fitting ITB's is not sourcing all the parts (kits are ready made by Omex, Weber, Jenvey etc) but installing and running the aftermarket ECU's on a daily driver, which I just can't see working very smoothly. On a race car it would definitely work, but not on a daily driver with all the added luxuries. By the way, the youtube BDA escorts are insane! |

Is it feasible to have a Cold Air Intake feeding cold air (go figure) into the Trumpet? From what I see in some race engines they have a Cold Air feed, then the Cold Air Box with a filter (BMC/K&N whatever), then the trumpet/s don't they?
I like what you've done though. On venting the bonnet, provided it's all above board, you could get something similar to the Mk 1 WRC Focus with twin vents.

I agree with you Eddie. Could have a cold air feed near the mouth of the trumpet, or build effectively a plenum box and feed that will cold air.
It certainly has been fun driving it this week, (my wife can hear me approaching the house from a km away) but think I will revert to the cold air intake. My theory is, by attaching the cold air hose directly, I am lengthening the intake tract which should give better low down torque, but sacrifice a little top end power. Visa versa, the short ram trumpet loses so low down torque but gains top end power. For daily driving, I think I prefer the firts approach. I am going to a dyno day in a few weeks, so will try and test both approaches
