What is the go with digital radio that coming soon? Will our cars be able to pick up reception or will we have to get some sort of converter?

I believe that it some cases it already exists. I just got a radio adapter for my iPod and it picks up radio station names. This must mean they are transmitting in digital. Saying this Sydney stations have a 1 sec silence every now and them now which is probably a digital hiccup.

No, that's old analogue technology that just hasn't been widely implemented over here. Was driving around Europe in a Peugeot 206 in 2005 and had the luxury of knowing what the song was even if I couldn't understand the language.
We then came home and bought the 307, and that's been telling us the songs since brand new. I think it's something like RSM or some other acronym on the radio that has to be set.
