Default Road noise

Hey Peeps,

I'm finding my AU is making a lot more road noise than it used to and it's making me think I'm going to benefit from new wheel bearings...

I also find that the car doesn't roll very well and I feel like I'm doing a lot of accelerating to maintain speed...

However, I'm not sure... What else could it be? I've ruled out tyres, because I've had these tyres about 6 months and I'm sure the noise is getting worse...

Could it be CV joints or the diff?

My car obviously hasn't had a really easy life, as the diff has a bit of backlash too (and I'm thinking of having that rebuilt too...).

The car is an AU series two - 5.0 litre with IRS (TE50).

The road noise was peeving me off as well. When I replaced the wheel bearing, it was back to normal. Also check rear strut mounts if they are worn.

I don't suspect door rubbers, as it's a "whirrring" whine noise than an air leak, but thanks for the suggestion.

I can't feel anything through the steering wheel so that might indicate rear bearings, is that what yours was? Is it a case of jacking up the car and feeling for play in the wheels?

Macman, when my wheel bearings went it felt a bit unsteady around corners and could not feel any movement untill I jacked it up. Stropp

I kind had the same problem sounds like a diff whine coming up through the firewall?
Mine was my tyres dont know why. had done less than 15k on the set... The tyre place refunded me pro rata and got back a bit.
New tyres ive used, bridgestone, toyo, dunlop before. But now ill always use Nexen! Fantastic tyres!
If its not tyres id try wheel bearings, or lower control arm bearings??

Hey Stropp, unsteady on corners? I feel like I'm driving a boat!!!

I'll jack it up and give the wheels a wiggle.

Mine is a T2 not T3 like yours but I wouldn't mind having someone who's familiar with the cars to have a drive of mine it just doesn't feel right...

Yes it's definitely a whine, not so much a grinding (like my old XE did when it had stuffed wheel bearings) but that was up front and you could feel it in the steering...

It does sound like it's coming from the front though...

My tyres are less than 6 months old, and i don't remember this much 'road noise' when I had them fitted, it's definitely developed.

I don't drive my car hard either, and never do 'burnouts' so can't say there's much wear either.

Yeah same here... But after 6 mths they just started making noise... a whine like sound coming up through the front, as is you had a front diff going bad Lol.
If you can borrow a set of wheels off a friend or second car... someone here on the forum.... Take it for a spin around the block- and it'll be gone ;)
Or just jack it up and give the wheels a shake and check your bearings? First

I've got a whirring noise on my car, which is very noticable at high speeds. I thought it was the wheel bearings, so I replaced both of them only to find that it had solved 50% of the noise.

I had tyres put on the car a few months back, so I was very certain that the tyres couldn't be the reason.

I had a good look at the tyres and I noticed that they are feathered on the outside of the tyre. When I go around a corner hard, the whirring noise gets worse. I soon realised I was sold cheap crappy tyres.

If you can, see if you can swap the front tyres for something else to see if the noise goes away.
