Ford Everest is built on the same line as the Ranger, its basically a wagon version of it.
Seems like there is a gap in the market for this type of vehicle, it would be the only workhorse 4wd wagon available apart from the LC70 Landcruiser.(which is at a different price point) Price it at say $35k for a basic 4x2 version, $40k for a basic 4x4 version and $45k for the luxury version I reckon they could sell a bucket load. They even come with seven seats

It looks like an older model Explorer, out of date compared to the Territory.

Seen one of these a few months ago as a test vehicle, they're similar in size to a discovery and certainly look the goods....

Not designed to be compared to a Territory, its a proper offroad vehicle, where you wouldnt care as much if you got the odd scratch or dent on a rough trail...
Weight is about 1800kg for a base 4x2 model, up to 2000kg for a loaded 4x4 auto model.

Ford have never had much luck busting into the 4WD market in Australia, we started with Jap and it's what we have become accustomed too, The fact that Toyota has sold stuff Like Hilux's and 75-79 series Cruzers for 50k Plus for a 4WD that came with leaf springs and no mod con's demonstrates this.
The Explorer was a Ranger Wagon sort of. it then went over and did it's own thing post 2001, If you wanted this thing to go up against the 70 series, they need 3 things a Diesel engine = to or better than the 4.5V8 Tojo Motor, Solid Front axle and Robust but comfortable Interior.

Ranger has quite a following (I think they are outselling the Falcon Ute!), and alot of people who drive them prefer it over the Hilux. As long as people realise its a Ranger wagon and not a rebaged Explorer or another American thing, it would do well.
An LC70 Wagon is nearly 50% more expensive.

I've got a Ranger Twin Cab and Territory AWD and I love them both. Would I trade the Territory in on an Everest? Not on your bloody life!!!!
Everest - Torsion Bar Front End (Floaty) Leaf Spring Rear End (Bouncy, Axle Tramp, etc) againt Territory - Virtual Pivot Front End (So good even BMW have copied it for their new X5!), Fully Independent Multi Link Rear, need I say more? Oh and I would guess that the Everest has the same 3 star crash rating that the Ranger has (Built on exactly the same Chassis) against the Territory's solid 4 star (Just missed 5 stars)? Still Intersted? Does anyone remember the Ford Raider from the late 80's, early 90's?, it was a shocker. Guess what? Same chassis is under the current Everest.... Forgot to mention also, Ranger is not outselling the Falcon Ute. Ranger is in the 600 to 700 sales whereas the falcon is in the 1500 ish area. |

If you wanted a wagon, why not just buy a ranger and put a canopy on it.
No point in getting a car in to fill a market which already has a great car in it.

It might find some sales but I'd rather they waiting for the next generation vehicle. The one that will be based off the T6 project that Ford Aus are currently heavily involved with.
For more on T6 see; http://www.autosavant.net/2008/04/ra...ve-ranger.html Quote:

the everest would never be direct competition for the territory, the territory is AWD, the everest is less sophisticated but 4wd & more than likely DIESEL, If ya wanted a wagon for the road the territory is for you, but in Australia Ford doesn't have a suitable off roadable wagon, a dual cab with a canopy is not always the way to go, the everest could fill a niche that Ford Australia currently doesn't compete in, being closely related to the Ranger would make it easier to bring in too.

Iszuzu is planning to release a wagon variant of the D-Max or Rodeo in Holden speak.

Wouldn't be too bad, would be a lot cheaper than a 70 series land cruiser wagon, being based on the Ranger it would defietly find enough sales, Ranger sells well here (YES it did outsell Falcon Ute in June, 1,327 Vs 1,267). Also being based on the Ranger it wouldn't cost too much to adapt to our conditions. It would be robust and reliable (as it's based on a Mazda, with Mazda Mechanicals) and probably find a lot of homes in the bush.
Completely different car to a Territory, comparing the two would be like comparing a Land Rover Defender and BMW X5, 2 completely different cars for two very different markets One thing I think it needs is the availability of a Petrol engine (preferably a V6) something not available in Ranger here. Personally I would prefer a 3.0L Turbo Diesel but many prospective buyers are still turned off buy Oil Burners.

Yes please, by the time Territory diesel comes out it will be $4.00/l ahha
We need an SUV sized diesel NOW. Which we have complaining about since Territory launch.

Mitsubishi is about to re-introduce the Triton-based Challenger, so I think Ford should give it serious consideration.
