Default Auto's out

Hey everybody.

After my 4sp auto has been playing up on me, I sent it off to a trusted mechanic. He told me I need a new transmission. I was pretty shocked, and to be honest, I don't have much money. He told me the hole deal could cost up to about $4500! Probably more than what my car is worth.

So, I was wondering if there was a cheaper way? Are AU auto transmissions common at the wreckers? I was thinking I would go have a look and try pick one up for real cheap. But then I wouldn't know if that trans had anything wrong with it, and if it it, I would just be forking out more money.

Does anybody have any pointers or tips for me? It would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

You can get a manual conversion done for heaps cheaper then that! Are you interested in doing that or do you just want another auto box?

I've operated a manual, but I have never owned a car with one. How much would it cost to get it running on a manual? And where could I find one?

Hi there AUIIForte

You're being had. You shouldn't pay more than about $1800 for a fully reco'd auto. I suggest consulting a new mechanic - or preferrably an automatic specialist.

I will be calling up other mechanics about my issue then. I can definitely afford about $2000 at this time, but nothing like $4500! He did say I need a complete new one though, not a reco. Unless he is just having me. Would you be able to explain to me why it should cost about $1800? I will be able then to talk to this mechanic and sort it out.

EDIT: I just rang my mechanic and he told me he wont need a new one, just a 'recondition' and that will be about $2500, plus extra for labor. I am so sorry for all this confusion!

I am still keen about this manual conversion. What would be the full price to get the manual in and completely working?

$1800? lol you are being 'had' aswell.. sheesh..

Wreckers sell them for $500-$800 bucks, $1000ish for exchange or $1200-$1500 for reco.
Probably get your one tricked up for the price of an exchange one.

Manual set up would cost around the $1000 mark. T5s are weak aswell, I spent $3300 just rebuilding the box (twice) before I was happy with it and it could withstand what I threw at it lol. Thats not including the aftermarket flywheel clutch and pressure plate. another ~$1200.

My car is completely stock. So I would hope a T5 would be strong enough? I'm going down to my wrecker, on the other side of Canberra and hopefully he/she will have the auto trans I need. How common are they? I've never been to a wrecker before, so I don't know anything about it!

Yeah stock will be fine and will take a fair bit of abuse..
mine was fairly stock and I shattered it lol, but thats revlimiter dumps and launches, flatchanging, pumping the clutch all sorts of stupid fun stuff..
They would be fairly common I'd imagine. Just go to a wrecker and ask for a BTR 4 Speed auto for an AU.

DAMN, I could get a built auto with a stally in mine for $4500....or less!

You are being had, never ever ever go anywhere near that place again, EVER. Best and easiest bet is to get yours auto back and send it off to a trusted place because I am betting that there is probably bugger all wrong with it. Where are you located?

I'd never pay $1800, but that's not what i said. I said you should not pay more than about $1800, therefore you should pay less than $1800. For a full, complete reco that I know will last for several hundred thousand kays, tip-top, quick service and a fat warranty i'd be happy to pay ~$1400.

Wow, if I ever need a new auto I'll be sure to hit you up for a reccomendation on who to take it to. The auto mobs up here seem to hamstring customers on price a bit.

I'm not sure about AUs compared to E-Series autos (basically teh same box), but you may be able to get one for $200ish nowadays... Many E-Series ones sell for $150ish.

I got a low-km V8 one (out of an NF, for my EB) for $400, in perfect condition. I'm sure an EFII/EL auto (with no dipstick) will go into an AU fine as AU autos definitely bolt into E-Series cars fine.

Get a low-km auto from the wreckers or from someone wrecking out a car, then either fit it yourself or expect to pay $250ish to get it done at a mechanic's ($170 labour, $80 for trans fluid & other consumables).

Tell your mechanic to jam that box in his ar#%se,he is taking you for a ride.......

They are $400 on ebay now.

And as stiddy said $500-$700 wreckers.

Im waiting for mine to blow in about 2 years from now its done 240ks and Im hoping to get 500k out of it.

how many ks was on the box and what was it doing wrong??
An oil/filter change does wonders for these things.

Mate I live in S.A. and at the moment my auto is shagged! I've looked around and found a few different prices for different boxes. Heres a summary of what I've found.........

Second-hand low k I6 BTR with 3 month warranty $590-850 from a couple of different S.A. wreckers (sorry auto recyclers :togo: )

Full recon I6 BTR with 2 year warranty from Transmission Shops in Vic $1550-2200.

Didn't even bother about a new one if you could find one!

My mechanic said about $350-400 to remove/replace said trans.
Go back and see the joker quoting $4500 and kick him in the nuts for him believing that you had sucker written in thick black texta on your forehead. What a gimp I hate clowns like that : : :

He's in Canberra, as per one of the early posts.

Go to Ford Spares in Fyshwick - you can get a reco there, fitted for around $1500.

Tuggeranong Transmission and Brakes fit EF/EL boxes to BAs, so they should go well enough in an AU as well.

My au 2 i not long bought has a ef trans fitted and it drives a treat apparently very easierly adapted using the au bell housing or a few mods to the ef bell housing!!!

best part is they are much cheaper trans and you get the added bonus of being able to check the transmission fluid on the dip stick unlike au boxes!!!
