''It's very easy to see that as we think about the future, it is likely that there will be significantly higher prices and we have got to think about the consequences of that,'' Mr Beattie said.

In the magazine, managing director Des King writes petrol prices in many countries are already more than $2 per litre.

Mr Beattie said he was sure the suggested rise was cause for concern for motorists.

''We've suggested that these sorts of prices could come about within the next decade, but we are not putting any date on it,'' Mr Beattie said.

''The cover of the magazine was intended to be arresting and draw people's attention to the issue.''

However, oil companies made a slim return and were not ''profiteering'' as was often alleged, he said.

Just got this from Age just minutes ago, i can't believe The Australian Media just because they see petrol @ $1.50/l atm, they think it will go $3/l in 10 Years omgf : : : , they should open they eyes, , I honestly don't think it will hit $3/l maybe $2l but not $3., The most expensive place i've seen petrol is my Home Country $2.50/l (Norway).

i think the fuel price debate is a can of worms which wont catch any fish.. absolutely nothing australians can do. Its up to Opec and them increasing supply but they wont increase the supply and so keep the prices up..

Some analysts are predicting that oil will be $120 a barrel in a ew months time others are predicting it will drop back to $70 a barrell.

In 10 years time hybrids will be totally redundant (they already are IMHO).
We should be getting round in reasonably powerful hydrogen powered cars by 2018.
Fuel prices won't be a concern for the average driver.

COMPITITION....At present there isn't any...
Even if its alcohol based fuels.. I'd like to see service stations open up as alternative fuel in competition.. I don't think it will happen though...

If you said 10 years ago that "In 10 years, fuel will average $1.40" people would have laughed at you.

To be honest, I'll be surprised if it takes 10 years to get to $3/l - I thought it would have been sooner. But we can hope...

I wouldn't be calling them : either - what statistical data or research did you use to come to your conclusion about prices that makes you able to say that they should open their eyes and that they are "pathetic"?

With reports like this they just about give Oil companies the green light to A*** *&^% us at the Pump even more.

Let's see, 10 years ago I earned $500 a week and fuel was about 70 cents a litre. I now earn a tad over double that and fuel is $1.50 ltr for 98 ron. All relevant when you factor time frames in.

Was watching a doco where a senior automotive engineer, who has been and is still working on a hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles, estimated that they are 20-30 years away from the point where it will be technically viable to mass produce vehicles that have the similar capabilities as the current average car.

Hydrogen fuel storage being one of the big hurdles.
