Default How much miliage is too much miliage???

If buying a late 90s car or early 2000's car how much miliage is too much miliage?? Im talking about so the car still feels really good and things arnt falling apart all over the place.

My first car was a 99 AU Fairmont with over 200k on the clock. Ran perfectly and the interior was barely worn. Traded that in for a AU Fairmont Ghia V8 with 120 odd that the oil didn't even change colour every 5000.

It really depends on the car and what kind of life it's had which is something that is usually impossible to know.

i voted 200,000 because i've had plenty of vehicles with well over 200k on the clock and they ran fine the only things that needed replacing was brake pads and tyres.

my BA is the 1st sub 200,000 thousand car..

my 1st XF falcon had 1.5 million on it...

after a power sterring pump and a new bush it ran as sweet as a nut...

my car after that was a EL that had 240,000 when i got it, 320,000 when i ditched it... and i added a turbocharger... and it was a nice ride...

if they are treated right and have not been driven like a racecar for that 200,000 it will be fine!

I voted 200,000km. They might be fine if they have been looked after but as there are plenty of late 90s cars around with less so why risk it.

what is the difference between a 20 year old car with 300000km thats been looked after and serviced and a 5 year old car with 300000km thats been looked after and serviced?
apart from the price.....probably nothing.

i have a ZL with 372000km.
i have a 03 BA with 155000km.
change the km readout on the BA and you wouldnt even know it had that many kms.
i had a 75 mazda with 340000km, interior was still immaculate but the rust got the body.
we also had a 84 Meteor with 340000ish kms body and interior were good. car wasnt worth the price to fix the head on when we killed it.

200,000km +, Ive drivien a few cars with this amount of milage and have driving fine. Although in saying that ive driving two cars with only 120,000km and felt like it was going to fall apart.

It all depends on the life/previous owners of the car and how the car has been treated

In regards to "mileage" it really depends. If it's a Datto 120Y with 200 000+ kays on it, i would pass, but if it's a Falcon with a Windsor or even a 4.0 in it, I would give it consideration.

There is no answer to this question because it depends on three things:
1. What car
2. How it was driven
3. How it was serviced

I have had a honda prelude from new that always got serviced right and when I traded it in it had 401,000 k's on the clock and was still driving perfectly. Would have gone that far again I recon as it was not using any oil and everything was nice and tight on it. Only reason I had to trade it is because the baby capsule would not fit in the back.
I also had a new alfa which was also serviced regularly however after less than 60,000 k's was totally worn out to the point that it was fill up the oil and check the fuel, and just about every component in the car was breaking weekly.

If it's still structurally sound and all the consumables are renewed as required it really isn't dependant on how many time the tyres have rotated.

By consumables apart from regular fluid changes (oil/coolant/brakes/gearbox & diff) I mean things like brake pads/rotors, suspension bushes, shockies maybe steering rack/joints etc.

If all of the above is replaced when required the car should still drive as well as it was intended too.

Oh, and tyres of course

Just about everything on the above lists start needed more attention by the time the first 100,000kms tick by.

Seriously if the car is looked after well, runs fine and isnt falling apart, anything around 200 would be fine i think!

to me you first have to define milage!
100,000k in city too much.
150,000k in country less than average.
horses for courses.

It depends on what the car is and what the price is.

For example, I'd happily buy a 300,000km+ Falcon. I'd happily buy say, a 150,000-200,000km Laser.

The condition of the car and how its been maintained is more important then outright how many km it has done. You can have a 500,000km car that's been maintained to perfection and an 80,000km car that's been absolutley trashed and you tell me what's going to be better...

My AU has done 203,xxx k's and it runs like an absolute dream, however it has been serviced all its life and had things replaced when they needed replacing. On most big fords, aslong as they're maintained, having a few hundred thousand k's racked up isnt much of a worry. Just make sure you buy one with all its service history documented.

My AU will click over 171,000km tomorrow and it does the same thing that fine wine does. Gets better with age.

Like many have said It all depends on how the car has been treated (which you can pick up enough of during observation), my VL had 270 000 on it and it went fine before the mods I done to improve it, my ea had 289 now onto 302 000, my dads EA was bought by us at 121 000 now its done 298 000, Ive had plenty of run arounders that have had high 200 000's that ran fine, a mate had an old ex taxi XF that had done 1.3 mill, and also my bosses brother has a TF magna that had done 340 000 when he bought it, now has 365 000 and it has ran fine. Besides tyres/brakes and a few other things here and there they all served well and still do now

i voted 125k because all cars i have owned have started getting major problems around the 200k mark. guess i could have voted 150k but with doing around 35k/year that is only 18 months before i can expect problems (in my expierence)

In the past, I would have said 300,000 but now that the EA's at 260,000 I have realised that isn't far away... and the EA isn't going to the wreckers just yet! Engine wise it still runs beautifully, and the interior is still in great condition, so basically it'll keep going till I've had enough of it.

But we all agree no-one would take a 93 Hyundai with 250,000 on it as a to and from work hack? Yeah right, 250,000 .


There are people who buy ex-taxis with 600,000 on em, and they run fine. There are versions of exactly the same cars in wreckers for reasons other than prangs with 200,000 on em.

Depends on the car but most falcons and commodores will still be fine with up to 250,000 on the clock. I know of an Xf where the speedo read 500,000km but had already been right the way through once. That is 1.5 million kms

I said 200,000+ mainly because my car had just over than when I got it, and I paid peanuts for it, and in the year that I have owned it, it has never disappointed me.

At the end of the day, if you treat the car right, don't thrash it, service it properly, replace the usuals (Tyres, Brakes etc.) then it should serve you well, Especially Falcons. Why else do you think the cab companies love the falcon so much.

My XF had 450K on it when I sold it. Ive got a 80 series cruiser with 260k on it, still going strong. We did replace the suspension and brakes at 200K but thats it

My VL has over 270,000Ks, and it drives just as good as a newish car.

I don't think KMs are a issue. It all depends on how well the car is looked after.

Your EA is nearlly at 260,000. Maybe i should spend a bit of coin on mine and keep her going instead of offloading it.

When buying a used car I would not look at anything over 105 thousand. But I am picky....

my el wagon has just clocked over 600 k , one gear box and motor so far but I will be selling it in a couple of month when replaced with the au , it's only done 220k so plenty of life left yet .
6 or 700 k is easily obtained with steady driving and lets face it the only cost is maintenance and fuel .
