Wink Well I've Gone and Done it!

Yep I finally did it.

After much thought, weighing up of options, doing the crunching of numbers and everything else, I committed to a manual conversion, Tuesday next week. I even pushed the relationship with the Good Lady Wife by ordering a set of Pacemaker 4499's as well. They'll turn up at my work Monday. I'm hoping the mechanic will fit them up for no extra charge on Tuesday, but we'll see.

The conversion she knew about (and reluctantly approved) the Pacemakers I've yet to discuss! LOL! Hopefully the Ministry of Finance (AKA the Good Lady Wife) will be gracious with me! LOL!

Cheers all, I'll keep you posted.

Hope everything goes well George.
It will certainly feel different having to push that clutch pedal in!!!!
What made you choose the pacemakers?

Where did you find the box, how many k's and who is putting it in?

The box is from a wreckers in Fawkner. Evan put me onto them. The mechanic there Nick, a family friend of Evan's family is fitting it all up for me. The best bit is that the box is brand new NOS. Every kay will be mine. That's what sealed the deal in the end.

As for Pacemakers, I had always wanted them, but today just decided to bite the bullet and run the gauntlet with the Mrs. I know I wont be doing any more engine work, this is it, and it's my best opportunity to do it. These things just have to be done sometimes! I'm still thinking of the way to tell her! Any suggestions? LOL!

Good luck with it GK. Finding a crack or split in the standard manifold (even if it's not really there) always help justify new extractors.

I love your work JC! LOL!

Funnily enough, I'm sure that there was an exhaust manifold leak of sorts though! Just not serious.

I guess it's best to get such things fixed though.

Just in case, I just ordered her Chrissie present!

It already has a cat back 2.5 Redback system. The Pacies are the final piece of the puzzle.

Good work GK! Do you mind my asking roughly what the conversion's set you back?

So far, I've managed to pull off every mod on my cars over the last few years through the whole maintenance/it's broken excuse - I think she's on to me though!

With regard to the extractors I would have thought that manuals "require" extractors in order to work efficiently?

No use having a manual if it's not efficient.

Do you need a manual ECU for this, or do you already have one?
I have one if you don't.

Also, I'm interested in a short shifter of sorts.

I did a search and found a few $400-500 but that's absolutely out of the question.

One guy said he just shortened the lever by 2-3cm with the angle grinder! This I can do for nicks. Is there any merit/gain from this? Anyone done it?

Evan said he got a different lever from ebay for $30 and I've driven his car and love the feel of it. He can't find the link but he thinks it was a bloke up country way who made them from his back shed. Anyone else know of this guy?

Cheers,

GK

As a matter of interest, I see manual conversions are almost entirely T5's here... has anyone done a Supra 'box conversion? I haven't looked them up for about 4 years, but back then they were going into V8's, I assume they'd be strong enough for an I6? And the shift quality would p155 all over the T5?

There are twin turbo Supras putting out over 1000rwhp. Guess what gear boxes are used in them.

Yeah I know this, but in all cases I know of its a second hand box. You can pick up a reco and strengthend box for around $1500 from memory.

I agree, but as far as manuals go, even a clapped out second hand supra box will be a better option then a T5

The debate about the supra box and T5 is interesting, but it's off topic. I am putting a T5 in my car, it's brand new and only costs a few hundred more than I've been asked for second hand T5 boxes with well over 100,000 kays.

Does anyone have any advice or links about my question regarding the shorter lever / shift?
