Why is the manual Version of the AU only rated to 1600kg but the auto to 2300kg?
Is it a drive train strength issue? Can this be overcome and can the vehicle then be recertified at the higher capacity? Just a though provoking conversation I just had. ORB.

The manual is only rated to 1200kg, not 1600kg (check your owners manual). The clutch is the weak point in the drive-train.
The standard tow bar on an auto is rated to 1600kg, and the Hayman-Reece square style hitch is rated to 2300kg, but to get the full rating, you are supposed to have the load levelling kit and large trans oil cooler fitted.
