Default XR4 tune for Focus Zetec?

I read today that the XR4 goes on sale today with a "tweaked" version of the focus motor delivering greater power and torque than the standard focus motor.

Quote from the article:

The 2.0-litre Duratec four-cylinder, borrowed from the garden variety Focus, has been tweaked to produce 110kw of power, up a meagre 3kW on the Focus engine, but with a much flatter and broader torque profile.

The XR4's peak 190Nm is reached at 4500rpm, but with 80 per cent on tap at 1500rpm and 90 per cent available from 2200rpm through to 6150rpm, the flexibility of the engine is impressive.

So .... Does anyone know if there is any physical mods to the stnd motor or is this just a retune? If its just a retune how easy would it be to have it done to my Focus Zetec and would ford do it for me under warranty ????

Pretty good question.

SO I assume most would be in the ECU, other than that I have NFI.

It has a different exhaust system and different intake.

If you retuned a standard Focus motor you could get more than 3kw and 5nm gain.

Thanks Black LS - interesting mods.

Does anyone know what the torque spread of the stnd motor is, and how this varies with fuel octane?

You can be confident that Ford Dealers won't provide support on tuning up to XR4 spec... it'd dilute the point of having the XR4 around.

I've dont have the rising figures, but it picks up around 2800RPM, peaks torque is at 4500RPM and peak power is at 6000RPM.

They'd be using the same gearbox I'd imagine?

I know it's been covered before, but isnt Fiesta ST/XR4's engine is from Ford Mondeo? And is it essentially the same engine that's in the LS Focus now?

Correct Ives. LS Focus engine with intake and exhaust changes. It feels like a totally different engine and sounds unbelievably better than the vacuum cleaner in the LS.

XR4 uses a standard Fiesta gearbox with shorter gearstick for a shorter "throw".

And Fiesta weighs 200 Kg less - that's 2 fat ladies and their shopping so XR4 should go almost ok...

Here is some more info...

This has been achieved via the inclusion of a variable valve intake system Ford dubs VIS that plumps out the available torque, as well as the implementation of a new exhaust set-up that features a revised catalyst for reduced back pressure, as well as a more tuneful tone.

A low-inertia flywheel has also been added for a faster throttle response

Have a look on the Taiwan Ford website. They have the new updated Focus on there and if you manage to get to the specs page you will see that their updated 2.0 Focus is 110kw/190Nm.

Hope Ford Australia sell the Ghia with black leather and chrome interior trim rather then the ugly wood look.

Getting to the specs page is not that easy for those that don't speak Taiwanese ... namely me.

I don't speak it either, but the pages are same layout as the AUS pages so I managed to find it.

Here you go:
Focus Specs

148hp/19.4kg-m = 11k0kw/190Nm

What if it also came with Side Curtain airbags, DSC & Traction Control ?????

That was my dilemma. Should I take a Zetec now or wait for the new model with safety features available.

In the end I got an 07 Zetec for $25200 driveaway whereas the new model would have been over $30k.

Good call, if you have say a Vectra now and wanna decent car then the XR4 would be on a short list for sure.

But seing I have an 06 Zetec the XR would not be anywhere near enuf to make me want to change.

We just need some private tuners to come up with locally supplied solutions because theres a whole lotta Kw lurking in that Duratec.

I reckon another 20Kw would transform the focus.

But the same 20kw can added to the XR4! Imagine how much better that would go!

Have you tried the Vectras inbuilt overspeed prevention system?

The autos have 4 preset speed limiters. Redline in 1st, redline in 2nd etc etc....

If your half serious about performance youll do the air intake and exhaust anyway and youll get a shitload more than 3kw or whatever it was. surely with an intake, header, cat and full exhaust along with a standard tune you would get another 20kw from a 2.0 duratec? what power are the blokes overseas making?

I was under the impression the XR4 had revised gearbox gearing? As in shorter to make it feel a lot quicker than the standard Fez.

Anyone to confirm?

All in all... it comes down to seat of the pants fun. Changing the gearing is an easy way to do that.

XR4 and WQ Zetec have the same gearing in the transmission, the XR4 has a different final drive, at 3.82:1, its alot taller.

Does the XR4 still have 4 x 108 rims that will fit an LR Focus?
