The crux of the game is kicking, and they they can't even do that well so they give em a 1 point encouragement award. A point for missing is dead set unaustralian.

Can't kick, can't catch, can't tackle and can't fight. deary me.

spot on.

during the past 30 years i've played all 4 codes and i have to admit union is my favourite.

the reason union and soccer suffer from lack of exposure is channel 7 own the tv rights to super 14 and refuse to show it [ it might stuff with the afl ratings ?] and local soccer is as exciting as watching a malfunctioning windscreen wiper. cheers.

I've played first grade league & union. Union is the most fun, league is much harder.

With union I just like a sport that you can be 5'10" and 120kg and be a professional athlete!

What you think a game where the idea is to chase a bloke around all day, tackle him and then have to give him another go is entertaining.
Atleast in AFL when you tackle and get the ball you get to keep it and not give it back.

No mate, netball is the most followed/popular sport in Australia. A girls' game beats all of them, ha ha ha.....Sad :

I played Aussie Rules for 10 years as a kid, and all I can say now is that it's a pansy's game, and the AFL is full of a pack of girls. Not only are they scared of each other, they're scared of the ball

You can't argue with the brutallity of Union, even if I don't ever know what the hell is going on..

Shows how little you know, more often than not, scoring a behind is a double negative for a team as the other team will often transfer the ball to the other end and score a goal within 30 seconds. Having played rugby league and Aussie Rules, league is less exciting to play and watch. I got bored out of my skull doing hit ups as a front rower.

AFL is far more skilful than rugby and requires more all around fitness and skills.

Rugby involves no neck and a lot of bulk. You just crash into packs.

AFL players must be able to fulfill various skills and due to this, can play in more than one position.

AFL crowds are larger, sponsorship is greater, membership is greater and merchandising does big smelly poo on everything.

But it comes down to personal choice.

I follow all the leagues, Rugby League would do bette if it wasn't run by Sydney for Sydney. The AFL is going backwards because its run by pansies who don't like the big hits anymore. Rugby Union needs to stop blowing the budget on league boys and invest in grass roots.

And what will ultimatley kill soccer in this country was a nasty little dive taken by an Italian superboot. Noone in Australia wants to see a $40 million dollar a year athlete score by hurting his ankle.

I agree that the AFL is becoming too much for pansies. Idiots like Demetriou have no idea and the only reason he was hired is because he is an idiot and can be easily controlled by the rest of the AFL commission.

AFL football is built on contested football where players go in hard but fair. Today, you fart in the proximity of anybody and you're reported and deregistered for 2 years. It's pathetic. Over-umpiring is destroying too many contests.

1980s and 1990s were the best decades because although there was far less violence (less a few incidents), there was aggression, melees, real bravery etc.

When Glenn Archer retires, he'll be one of the last of a dying breed who doesn't rely on the umpire to look after him. That is in direct contrast to Matthew Lloyd, who should join the Australian Olympic diving team.

On Saturday, we had the Grand final of the AFL Capricornia league here in Central Qld, it was one of the best games I've ever seen, better than many top level games. There were a few die hard league guys who came along, trying to figure out what was going on, asking questions and all, by the end of the match they said that it was the most brilliant thing they'd ever seen.

make those comments north of the Murray and you won't have to worry about your elastic, you'll be the proud owner of a A grade premier league wedgie.

Seriously though, Union is on it's way again with the Mazda Australian Rugby Championship - Go the Rebels!, changes to Premier Grade with Pillar Cups, Go the mighty Rams (Tighthead retired...for now) Props are starting to get good at 32 and go all day. League - Go Storm, is an awesome spectacle like Gridiron in the USofA, more specialist and AFL (Catters all the way) is great to but as full of itself as most of it's players - the 'Love of the Game' is gone, too much of a business now, which is exactly the problem with an otherwise fantastic sport called Soccer (Victory still rock though).

Football is like Spirits - one or two are good - more is better.
And too much Coke is never a good thing.

uranium death we do battle once more. ha ha.

i have to disagree with you on this one. as i said earlier i've played all 4 codes [ aussie rules and soccer not very well] and i think you are mistaking rugby union for rugby league.union requires a hell of a lot of fitness, skill, strength and smarts where league just requires a sh!t load of pain killers.

aussie rules is a brilliant game and it's players are amazing athletes but it's going soft.let the players play and bring back the biff. cheers.

Australian Rules was MEANT to be based on a contest, but as I said, the current commission is destroying what was once a great game.

IMO, AFL is becoming like rugby often. Games are lower scoring, more scrums etc.

Boring as buggery

Bring back 1980s

I think the quality of australian rules football is quickly being eroded by AFL over regulation and that reflects in the quality of games we se.

Having said that I would still much rather watch aussie rules over any form of rugby and you can still se grass roots footy at its best at any suburban ground on a saturday afternoon,SANFL,WAFL etc.

Agreed.

Grassroots goes even deeper into junior clubs.

The only thing I believe the AFL does better now is helping to support junior football. As a business, the AFL is run far better today.

HOWEVER, as a game, it's run like a circus.

AFL is beyond a circus it's a bloody joke, the time of a game is actally dictated by tv networks so we have to go to games at 4pm on a sunday afternoon because it fits in with ch 7 programing?????

In grand final week we have the AFL chief threatening players with suspension for any rough behaviour before the ball has bounced, players arnt allowed to be show emotion anymore......yet they almost condone drug use with there p%ss weak drug rules.

It has virtualy become a none contact sport with any display of "rough behaviour" being met with atleast a two week suspension.

When a football league cares more about its image then the game itself I have lost all time for it,and that is exactly what the AFL has done to aussie rules.
