Default Ticking noise

Hey guys and gals.
Over the past few weeks I have noticed a ticking noise comming from the left hand front of my car.
After pulling the inner arch of I discovered that it was the air solinoid/relay thingy beside the purge canistor.
Now my question is:-
Can it be fixed or do i have to replace it ?
Also if it has to be replaced how much?

You are correct. It is the purge canister solenoid. Common case. It's working okay so does not need replacing, just an annoying noise. Easy fix is to insulate it with something like a rag or sound deadening material and wrap it all up with lots of electrical tape, then cable tie it away from the body. You cannot just replace the solenoid by itself. It comes with tubing hard fixed to it. Cost is about $120 I think. I replaced the one in my AU XR8 about 3 1/2 years ago and that's what I paid.

yeah have the same problemo but i was told if i changed the solenoid it would just start ticking again! if it does fix the ticking i'd be happy to pay that much cos its such an annoying ticking!!!!!! plus everyone looks at u funny.

Just get as louder exhaust, then you won't hear the ticking. Works for me.

i'm sick and tired of mine making this noise as well, kind of embarrassing. How do you pull off the inner arch without damaging the plugs or is it a matter of just replacing them?

From what i have heard about this problem , around 50% of the solenoids out there make this ticking noise , it's actually not really a problem and doesn't effect the reliability/function of the solenoid. You can change it and good chance the ticking will stop - but then there is a 50/50 chance on weather that new solenoid will start clicking/ticking again too, some solenoids don't do it at all and still aren't doing it ... up to you how much it bothers you and weather you want to fix it. Mine actually did it for he first 2 weeks i owned my car , then all of a sudded it stopped clicking and hasn't since. . lol

The ticking from the front left guard only afflicts V8s, so your ticking must have been something different.

Richo, you sort of lever out the screw part of the plug with a small flathead screwdriver, or a small pair of longnose pliers, then just pull out the bigger, outer part with your hand or the longnoses again. They should be reusable. If you stuff any up, you can get a pack of them from supercheap, autobarn etc for about $3 for 5 or 6 plugs.

thanks JC thats all i needed to hear.

Speaking with a ford guy he reckons that only the AUs were programmed to cycle the solenoids when the car is at idle thats why you notice the noise. So this got me thinking that one of the guys that do the flash tunes could program it to cycle when above say 1600 rpm where you wouldnt notice it....

np , i wasn't so much on about just from around the left guard area , i was just on about a ticking noise from under the hood in general . On the 6 though you'll find its prolly the solenoid for the charcoal canister for the breather for the fuel tank, if you happen to get a ticking/click noise from the I6 . ;)

I have replced mine with a new one and it still makes a that annoying noise. I have given up on fixing it.

Running on LPG tends to stop this noise most of the time
.. but 'cos petrol always circulates while the engine is running, it does pop up occassionally :(

i have a ticking sound on the driver side.

i havent pulled the mould off, but is it the probable cause as well?

Interesting indeed, as a friend has just purchased a AUII XR8. When he first got it he didn't even notice it until I pointed it out lol. Could someone give me a quick lesson on the above quote please and I'm guessing there's more than 1 solenoid? Thanks guys.

The XR8 I've just purchased does it. Didn't notice it on the test drive AAAHHH. So the best solution is to try and insulate it yourself? Its a very loud noise from the passenger side wheel hub.

Where is this panel located? Are we talking access from inside the car (near passeners feet) or somehow from underneath near the wheel arch? I've only noticed this and don't really know where this solenoid is located and how to get to it.

is this the same problem if the sound is coming from the driver side? its an on and off sort of noise for me. but yeah its getting louder.

It's very loud, almost sounds like when you are checking for a spark and have a lead off against a sparkplug. Bloody nuisance! :togo:
