at bunnings... buying some attachments for a sprinkler system.

they had the individual pieces at 2:95 each or a bag of 25 or something.

so i grabbed the bag... it scanned at 2.95 in total...

so i got 24 attachments free.

At the supermarket I work at the problem scanning rate is less than 1%. It is checked weekly. In our induction for new workers they are told they can believe the customer but in 95% of cases we check. In 90% of cases when the customer believes the price is wrong and we check the customer is wrong, usually having looked at the price above or below or just trying to scam us. If the item has mistakenly been put in the incorrect space the item is given at the lowest price and is not free as this is not a scanning error. If only one or two items are found to have been put in the wrong space the correct price is charged as they could have been put there by anyone including the customer. At least the supermarkets have a code of practice, try getting a free item at the local Ford dealer if the wrong price comes up on that nice FPR fleecy jacket you buy, or any other type of retail shop. As was pointed out you don't have to finalise the transaction to get the item free only point it out that the item scans at the incorrect price. But be prepared,we will check but I don't understand why operator would argue the free item if that is the store policy. As Feathers pointed out there are 50,000 lines in a supermarket 2000 of them changing weekly for specials, another 2000 prices increasing, 1000 decreasing, fruit and veg change daily due to market prices. There are bound to be mistakes and you cant tell me they are all in the supermarkets favour.

And another interesting thing where i work (i'm not sure if this applies anywhere else) if the checkout operator asks you if you know the price of an item that isn't scanning, the operator has to accept the price you tell them (within reason of course). So you can say something that really is $8.99 is $8 something, and 9/10 operators will enter $8 as the price... as so forth..

Yes its played on by dishonest people, but not much can be done about it

Its the scanning code of practice for retail supermarkets
Nothing wrong with being a checkout chick Melz! It's a good honest job that gives you a living and you are standing on your own 2 feet not spunging on anyone! You have every reason to be proud!
